The opening makes fun of blue and people who like blue.

Dang. This meme is 20 years old. I remember citing it to one of my friends to explain why was not excited for the Watchmen movie.
Counterpoint: big blue shlong.
This is why I never want Iain M Bank's books to be made into film
'Its only problem is that they called it "blue", had they chosen a different name that had nothing to do with "blue the game" it would have been an awesome movie.'
Every single time.
I, Robot be like:
I, Robot at least had substantial aspects taken from (mostly) the last short story. IIRC the bulk of the overarching plot was based off of it.
It was totally off in tone and characters, but as Hollywood adaptations go it was pretty OK. On the other hand it was a fun action comedy with a SciFi veneer.

Isn’t that basically every Asimov adaption?
It took several aspects from the short stories in 'the complete robot' and kind of mashed them together in a way that didn't really match the tone of any of them.
The Halo TV series
I mean the first couple of episodes had the protagonist rape a prisoner and not as any kind of character or social commentary so I can safely say it just sucked.
Basically every videogame movie is produced the same way: take an unrelated generic script, slap the game branding on it, ship it out.
See: Doom, Borderlands, Resident Evil, Street Fighter (Rip. Raul Julia), the super mario bros, Monster Hunter, Tekken, Prince of Persia, BloodRayne...
The first hitman movie was at least... like, kinda fun? Bad movie but we stan an ace king.

I remember bursting out laughing when he's about to bang some lady and instead just jabs that giant syringe in her neck.
Half of those movies were directed by the same person, Uwe Boll.
Careful now, don't talk shit about him or he'll challenge you to a fight (unless he thinks he might lose)
I honestly enjoyed Super Mario Bros. Sure it only had like 10% in common with the games but seeing Toad being turned into a Goomba was hilarious. Street Fighter was also pretty great just for Raul Julia's bombastic acting alone. Seeing these creative liberties being taken can be infuriating at first but after the dust settles they can still be fun to watch if only to see how much of a trainwreck they can be.
Fuck anything by Uwe Boll though. He was an asshole and his movies were always painful to watch.
Super Mario Bros is a high budget B-movie and it's pretty charming for that. I enjoyed much of it, but I also kept reflexively punching the friend who made me watch the damn thing so idk if that's a positive review or not. It's a bad movie, but bad movies can be fun. Plus, "Monkey!" is perhaps the greatest line ever penned.
I agree there's plenty of aspects in just about any movie to enjoy, especially for the meme value - I enjoy the hell out of James Marsters as King Piccolo in DragonBall: Evolution, he fucking nailed that role (I'm so funny). The movie is almost objectively trash though.
It might have been that the Mario movie was made by Illumination so I had almost no expectations going in but I did really enjoy it way more than I was expecting.
It's kinda weird how that company is definitely capable of producing a good movie and they've demonstrated that a few times but they kinda just choose not to
They're talking about the Super Mario Bros movie from 1993 with Bob Hoskins. It was a dark dystopian cyberpunk movie.
Let's not kid ourselves most games have a pretty generic story.
Definitely true, it highly depends on the genre though. You can't expect a good story from an FPS game but they do exist. With RPGs it's part of the experience.
Street Fighter wasn't just a generic script, it was a GI Joe script for a live action adaptation that hadn't gone through. I wanna say they only got the Street Fighter license in order to salvage the project.
Apparently the Mario Bros Movie actually had a good script that was much closer to source material, only for the directors to throw it out because they don't do fantasy, only cyberpunk.
Prince of Persia was at least partially written by Jordan Mechner, the creator of the series. Three other writers also got writing credits as well, but my understanding is that Mechner was involved throughout the process. Which is crazy because of just how bad it is compared to the Sands of Time.
Similarly, Wing Commander was written and directed by Chris Roberts, which makes me wonder how he could get so much wrong. Though in retrospect, I'm kind of surprised it came out at all.
I still have no idea what the Vampire Survivors movie is going to be about.
Vamps that survived, obviously.
What we do in the shadows
Creepy paper!
Elden ring movie plz b good
How can it possibly be good? I dont see what a cinematic adaptation could possibly offer. It'll be a lot of sword fights and cgi magic and chaos and that's it.
If it's not incredibly painful and difficult to watch, how can it be a faithful adaptation?
lmao point taken
I'm thinking it could be like The Green Knight? There's so much lore that can make for peak cinema
They missed me with that Monster Hunter movie, you could plainly see in the trailers it was just a US Military advertisement.
Wow, I completely missed that this movie exists and thought you were fucking with us. But no, they seriously did a soldier isekai into Monster Hunter world. How much coke was involved in making such a travesty?
Either too much or nowhere near enough.
ANY project that involves buying a license for an IP to make it is a lie. It is not the same thing as the original. It is, at best, as much like the original as a clone. It might look like it's related but it's purely a marketing gimmick to milk your nostalgia for every dollar they can slurp out.
Fuck nostalgia. The past was shit. You just forgot how shit it was.
The notion does feel a little cynical. It's not like this is necessarily always the case and, even if such projects will fundamentally always be an attempt at making money in the hands of large studios, they can be well executed regardless.
It's an example of the other way around, but as someone who frankly was immune to the notion of nostalgia from it, I recently watched the first Alien movie for the first time and played Alien Isolation afterwards. That was an amazing example of a game that really represented the ambience, notion and feel of the originals without being a carbon copy of it (even if they did rely overmuch on parallels in some parts and the general structure is surely more than inspired).
Though I suppose I must also give the point that I can't think of an example of the game to movie pipeline that ended well. I'm sure someone will be able to share some positive experience there.
And/or you were a minor and were sheltered from a lot of it.
I mean you can't really expect modern audiences to understand the color blue, so of course it's just a reasonable reinterpretation into a different medium to make blue red like audiences are more accustomed to.
And then invariably you’ll have the people who come out of the woodwork to say “but it’s such a good movie and why were you expecting it to be just like the source material?” like that’s a good point…
Cries in Max Payne.
Borderlands I haven't watched, the trailer was enough to put me off.
The first Resident Evil I really liked though. The Street Fighter movie with Vandamme and Kylie was camp fun.
Fallout has been pretty fun.
I feel like series adaptions of games and books work better in general, you can fit in more of the original's world building
Ironically a great Fallout adaptation that might even tell a better Fallout story than 3 and 4 whose only sin is Bethesda gleefully shitting over all the West Coast canon out of jealousy.
Meanwhile the protagonist is a plucky Midwesterner and literally no one would have cared if they did the same thing to the Midwest canon.
The one video game movie that springs to my mind that is like the video game is Mortal Kombat. Right around then in the early 90's, the movie industry didn't even try to understand the games they were movieing, but they did. Compare that to, say, Super Mario Bros.
