Needs more trees but great progress nonetheless.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Has me wondering if underground infrastructure is an issue. I see shrubs in pots, which is what eventually happens when people are told to plant trees and they can't because there's "too much shit underground." I'm paraphrasing of course, but that's the gist of it.

Oh yeah you're probably absolutely correct. With the proper infrastructure it can probably still be done but that definitely makes it more difficult.

In those kinds of situations other good options are green walls, vine trellises, etc.

[–] freebee@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

With those other good options the building owners are often against. They fear damage to building from roots or plants attaching directly to the facade, although there are many plants where that's not an issue

Agree, maybe green island w trees where the lanes currently are. (Center of street) And then bike lanes between the island and the sidewalks.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago

My experience as a Dutchie (making me an expert on anything bike-related of course), for the bikers it is really nice if the bike lanes are in the middle because people don't tend to notice they step into 'traffic' if there is a non-traffic island in the middle.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 4 points 4 days ago

I agree with the Dutch guy. The trees should be offset to one side, so the the trees don't obstruct the view as pedestrians and cyclists cross each other in the middle.

Also, this bicycle lane probably doubles as access for fire trucks and ambulances.

There's a subway tunnel immediately under that street.

And limits on electricity consumption.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Let's also limit Times Square electricity consumption and light pollution while we're at it

[–] modus@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

But more Elmo costumes is ok.

Only a clip about the US can simultaneously be meant as a way to show how great it is, and start with two people shouting at each other to fuck off.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Yeah, that’s my favorite part.

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Might be a dumb question but are e-bikes allowed in bike lanes in nyc?

[–] Glowstick@lemmy.world 26 points 4 days ago (2 children)

There's basically no enforcement of non-car movement violations, so it's defacto legal

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's basically no enforcement of car movement violations either

[–] Glowstick@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

There are tons of speed and red light cameras for cars, but no live enforcement for anything else anywhere else

[–] Blibly@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

I wish they'd do this to Broadway in Chicago.

[–] Hal@piefed.nz 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What's the point of the painted crossing if the pedestrians have to give way to the bikes?

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think the bikes are illegally not yielding to right of way.

Better than cars doing the same though.

Can someone assure me democracy is actually good? All I see is people constantly being against things are clearly good for them...

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

IMO the big problem with democracy is just how we structure it, in most of the world it's still using a system designed for an age where everyone was busy farming and it took representatives 3 weeks to travel to the capital.

like, 4-year terms are obviously insane, right? Things happen way too fucking fast for it to make sense that a guy gets to be in charge for 4 fucking years and we just can't do shit if it turns out they were lying.

And the reprensentative system also obviously doesn't work, no one knows their representatives, they aren't representing shit. A human cannot represent thousands of people, we literally don't have the fucking mental capacity or time for that!
Representatives should be way way way way way way way way... way way way way more local, they should be someone you can literally discuss things with over a cup of coffee, someone you can actually comfortably call if you're worried about a piece of legislation.

[–] nialv7@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The current situation in the US is obviously terrible, but things are happening in democracies structured differently too. Look at the AfD rising in Germany. And they even have a fancy voting system with proportional representation!

Like do people have America exceptionalism in how exceptionally bad it is, too?

[–] DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

A democracy needs informed citizens. Poor education and manipulation from politicians makes it easy to fool someone in to voting against their own interests.

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago

most of all media needs to be about truth and authenticity

freedom of speech and anonymity fundamentalists don't recognise the threat to democracy

equally censorship and doxxing is also bad for democracy

there must be a balance and at the moment it is far too tipped towards liars

[–] deWafelMan@lemmus.org 7 points 4 days ago

Democracy is a bad way to govern. Problem is, all other ways are even worse.

So, couldn't find one video without a guy being a dick right away huh?

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 1 points 3 days ago

From NYC? No such video exists.
