It's insane that it isn't illegal to take someone's money and then unilaterally change the terms of the deal after the fact. Can you imagine a customer writing new terms of service and sending it to the company and expecting it to become a binding contract if they don't immediately cancel the subscription?
At most, any changes they make should not take effect until the subscription renews, and even then, changing the terms should also end any automatic renewal because it's a new agreement.
If I agree to a contract to purchase and back out I typically have a penalty.
This is most commonly ran into when you enter into contract on a property.
Your security deposit, in my state, for a rental incurs simple interest and is returned to you with that interest.
Why we let a company have us enter into a contract for what they can offer and then arbitrarily change the terms but not require you to agree to the new terms before charging you for the new terms … consumer protections in the USA are ass
"To refuse the new terms, simply stop providing me service. If service is still provided after the next five (5) business days, the new terms will be applied".

Google did this to me. I bought Fitbit a couple years ago and ended up throwing it in the trash when Google replaced the wonderfully simple Fitbit app with some bullshit called Google Health, packed with AI.
These practices shouldn't be legal, but corporations are allowed to do absolutely anything now.

I could have sworn this is actually legal, in the sense of "silence is acknowledgement". I mean, isn't it the point of negotiation? One side pass proposals, the other side has to react.
Yeah but this is after terms were agreed to.
So imagine you shook hands on terms, then one side walked away and whispered “sike I had my fingers crossed here are the real terms” and then it’s on you to catch that and react.
Unfortunately, the terms had terms in them to allow them to change the terms.
Disney+ subscribers change agreement to pay, become former subscribers, and learn to pirate.
They tighter they squeeze, the more will slip through their fingers.
I haven't pirated since the pre-Netflix days. I did for years, but then once streaming was so cheap and it had everything I stopped. This year I had to set it all up again. Before I didn't really have a good set up it was just ad hoc, downloading and tossing stuff on a server.
Now, thanks to that last D+ price hike I completed my arr stack and I have any movie I want as soon as it hits streaming, plus on going monitoring of all my shows regardless of where they are streaming. Even if they get their shit together now, I won't be leaving this set up.
So thanks Disney, for giving me the motivation I needed to complete my media stack, it was long over due.
There are many other sources of entertainment. Your local library has books, and probably other media too.

I'm actually in the middle of catching up on ted lasso through my library system - though season 3 is on 3 disks, meaning 2 cases, so I have to track down how to separately request season 3 disc 3 of 3

People don't know better in general, or they are aware and don't care. Third possibility is they are aware but have no means or knowledge of any alternatives.
For some people, Netflix has become akin to a utility like electricity and it is factored into the family budget every which way.

I’m generally alright with “advertisement” in the form of a preview for another show on the platform. Before, with a skip, and after with a “I already ended the program”
But like … HBO used to show commercials FOR HBO in between movies. And if they show me a ad for Disney+ … straight to the cancellation page.
They show me an ad for anything unrelated … cancellation.
And one more reason I will never come back.
You can use most routers to filter out ads so if you're not using Firefox with ublock you can still get around it
