!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I've seen a few users who use phonetic symbols or something alike in their posts and comments. What's the point?

If it's the person using 'Þ' instead of th, then it's as others have commented. It's a single attention seeker, who pretends like it can somehow poison AI training data

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 33 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Hey I love me a harmless and good natured troll. Shit's a lost art. Them and dragonfucker. As a bonus it helps weed out people who don't know how to not feed trolls. Non-malignant trolls are part of a healthy online ecosystem.

[–] oscarmeyer82@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I miss unexpectantly learning about how everything relates to that time undertaker threw mankind off a cage and the alternative uses for booster cables.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The thorn is so harmless, and honestly, sxan has been one of my favorite people to converse with here for a long time. I've never gotten anything trollish from them at all.

I enjoyed drag as well, though I can understand why drag was much harder for people to cope with. I always found it a fun challenge to try and speak drag-speak, and I always had fun with them otherwise just treating them as though there were nothing out of the ordinary with them. Drag talked to me about things I found interesting, and frankly there are too few regular commenters in general for me to just weed them out for harmless things. Conversation has felt a bit dead the last few weeks, and I'd love to have another quirky weirdo here to talk to most days. Way better than all the political extremists and accelerationists we never seem to fall short of.

I enjoyed drag as well

Took me way too long trying to figure out how that has anything to do with the topic at hand.

It's been a while since I've seen Drag. I wonder if Drag is okay.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I don't know if it was a bit, a troll, if they were really like that, or whatever, but other than the unorthodox pronouns, there was nothing different about talking to them. Always positive interactions with them. I hated seeing everyone here dogpile on them, as I thought a big upside of this place was supposed to be letting people just be who/what they want to be. Never saw them be rude to anyone, just asked to be called Dragonfucker/rider depending on the time period and to use drag in the place of any pronoun. With some phrasings it sounded odd, so I took it as a creative writing exercise to format my responses in a way the language flowed better. I just thought it was shitty how people couldn't just ignore them if they didn't want to humor drag. I don't know if they took it serious or not, but I'd rather know I'm not being shitty to someone that is either having innocent fun, or may have some severe emotional or mental issues. We're all real people on the other side of the screen.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah. I find that my conversations with sxan are generally pleasant. If you don't make your interactions with them centered around the thorn, they seem nice.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I used to apologize for people needlessly antagonizing them, but they said it didn't bother them, so now I just roll my eyes people can't get over it after so long now or just block them. That people just go around purposely doing petty shit like downvoting them in every comment is just a really sad look for those users.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Dragonfucker was not harmless. If you think they were, then you didn't hear their opinions about suicide. Needlessly cruel and disgusting.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I had not, no. If you've got specific examples I'm open to seeing them, but personally I've never really been the type to audit other people's comment history.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

I don't go auditing other people's history either. I didn't have to. It was public discourse, idk, a year or two ago? Plenty of examples were shared, some of which confirmed by Dragonfucker themself. I never saved any of it because why the hell would I? It wasn't that important to me.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Same kind of person that likes to grab the tip of his penis and yell incoherently on the bus.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 69 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (7 children)

It's a single user who likes the attention they get for it. Block and move on.

[–] MurrayL@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Personally, I find the memorable weirdos are part of what makes Lemmy fun. I only tend to block the blatant spam or bot accounts. But each to their own!

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Me too. I don't even block the tankies.

[–] BeelzebubEiNukuKoskaan@piefed.social 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I had to block that user for the sole reason of my brain stopping reading every time I saw that symbol, then I had to figure out what the hell it was before the brain unfuncked itself and could continue reading. I guess if I read that symbol every day, it'd get easier. But coming across that user every 3rd day or so, wasn't really enough for my brain to start automatically figuring things out on the fly. And yes, my brain is stupid and it makes me stupid as well, I know this.

I'm already typing and reading in my 4th language, I don't need to complicate my life anymore than that. So blockety-block-block is the answer.

[–] zerofk@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have that problem when people use “it’s” when it should be “its” and vice versa. Unfortunately blocking those would leave me with a Lemmy of maybe half a dozen users.

[–] bryndos@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Grin and bare it; Its good to be more tolerant's.

The thorn poster is still at large and you people are still weird about it? Hasn't it been like a year?

[–] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 26 points 1 day ago

Bit of a Þorny subject, eh?

Whenever asked they always spout some bullshit about poisoning AI.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago

to test peoples patience limit for blocking. seriously I think they think its some kind of anti ai ju ju.

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago

Just one user's quirk I guess. It's a nice example of how we focus our anger at the wrong things.

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago

Some people have typing quirks I guess. Harmless form of self-expression.

They're on about people like sxan

[–] remon@ani.social 17 points 1 day ago

Ah, that explains why I'm not seeing it.

[–] GrayBackgroundMusic@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Who is sxan? I searched and didn't find a user with that name. Can you please link and example or their username?

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

You know, phonetic symbols like s, m, r, k, etc. I'm so fucking sick of it!!

They give pronunciation guides. Or they're effing around. It's the internet.
