Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

I wonder how many journalists were among that 3000

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 28 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Wait they only have 3,000 customers. How is that not the main story here, who cares if their data was hacked, if they are a custom of trump mobile they're probably the sort of idiot that posts their photos credit card on Facebook anyway

[–] ZapBeebz_@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think probably half of those are YouTubers who bought the phone as a bit for content, to tear it down and see just how shit it is, etc.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Which almost seems like the reverse double con.

There was never a phone in the first place. Never expected to be. It was all a scam to get lefty YouTubers to buy a thing that doesn't exist because they were going to shit all over it.

[–] ZapBeebz_@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lotta effort and embarrassment to get maybe a gross profit in the low 5 figures. Take into account the actual work to get it to that point, even a brick dropshipped from China is gonna cost something to send, and they certainly lost money on the con

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

I'm thinking more like someone convinced Don Jr to get the name rights, then ran off with the 5 figures.

[–] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 128 points 2 days ago (1 children)

the company's spokesperson then added the nugget that they were still evaluating whether they needed to inform the affected customers

Very on brand.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Legit they might not have to because the laws around that are based on the number of people affected. 3600 might be below that number.

[–] aldo@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

They’d need to report if 10 of them are from Massachusetts.

[–] undecidedyellow@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Really doubt they have a Legal, Risk, and Compliance team to help them navigate state-specific laws

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 136 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That's ... Not a lot of subscribers.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 89 points 2 days ago

And that includes all the youtube influencers who subscribed for the lols.

[–] capt_wolf@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (4 children)

That's still 3,600 people who already fell for an obvious grift. That's basically a gold mine in future scams!

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

I just feel bad for the two or three journalists who only subscribed to get the sauce

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 7 points 1 day ago

I mean, all in all that's less than I'd have thought it'd be. Kind of makes me feel better about things to be honest. I've had more than 3600 people engage with shit I've made and I'm nobody.

Only 3600 subscribers 🤣😭

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

Explains why there's no one to handle it.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 12 points 2 days ago

How many of them are content creators who were either rightoids given the phones for free or just got it to make fun of it on their videos

[–] BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

I'm more surprised that 3600 switched. I mean even among his most ardent followers there seems to be an understanding that he's not good business.

Interesting enough article, and thank you for sharing. But can we talk for a moment about the "About the author" and his apparent inability to decide whether that section should be in first- or third-person?

About the author: Writing is my one incontrovertible passion. Over the past six years, he has authored over 2,200 distinct articles on financial and tech-related topics, spanning nearly 1 million words. And he has been a member of Wcctech mobile team since 2025. As an alumnus of the University of Toronto, Rotman Commerce Program, I bring nuance, in-depth knowledge, and a unique perspective to every topic that I cover. When I'm not writing, I'm traveling the world, exploring hidden confectionaries and restaurants as an aspiring food connoisseur.

[–] athairmor@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wow, that is some awful writing.

[–] abcdqfr@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Smells like a local LLM lol. That or schizophrenia

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago

AIs tend to be consistent on things like that. I think it's just two people writing things and the result has been bodged together.

I want to put money on the fact that they sold the data, themselves, for a profit. Since they had an absolutely pathetic number of subscribers

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 39 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Wow, a single small village of Trump Mobile subscribers will be very mad!

[–] ScrambledEggs@lazysoci.al 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How do you determine who is the village idiot?

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

It's kind of like how all the world's best athletes congregate for the Olympics, everyone there is great at what they do, otherwise they wouldn't be there.

This is like that, except exactly the opposite. They're all idiots. Delegations from individual towns, having a contest of supreme dunceness.

So 25% journalists reviewing the phone and the rest spies?

So, here is what we know so far. Apparently, Trump Mobile only had 3,615 MVNO customers, and all of their sensitive private information has now been leaked on the dark web. The data trove includes first and last names, email addresses, telephone numbers, home addresses, and details on orders with Trump Mobile, as per an analysis by Straight Arrow.

I didn't think "Trump Mobile Subscribers" would be a big enough pool of people to be a tempting target for hackers...That's a lot of work for a list of trailer-parks...

[–] HappyCatLuvs_U@lemmy.world 63 points 2 days ago (1 children)

To be fair to the hackers, it is a list of the people most gullible and least able to admit being fooled.

Nah, that's a highly gullible set of the populace. Prime target for further scams.

Lol. If the subscribers were a town it wouldn't be big enough to have a Walmart.

The hackers should brick the phones and have only the TRUMP-EPSTEIN FILES (TM) show up on them.

[–] ClownStatue@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

Have the mobile phone plan you voter for! :-)

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago

Speaking of PR, the Poplar Group, which had entered into a services contract with Trump Mobile only in June 2025, and whose Chris Walker had given the now-infamous statement to USA Today back at around the same time, asserting that the T1 Phone was, in fact, made right here in the United States, is no longer representing Trump Mobile. Trump Mobile has, since then, altered its marketing narrative to "assembled in America."

Isn't that old news? I thought they changed it again, to something like "Designed with American Values in mind." Like, literally no part of the design or production takes place in America. It's a slightly modified version of an old HTC phone. They might put it in boxes to ship out, but that's it.

They sold it then lied about a hack. Are you new here?

[–] YouTalkinToMe@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Well that seems according to expectations.
