7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

His role as Picard defined what a good leader and authority figure should be like for me.

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 135 points 4 days ago (18 children)

I gave my team the explicit instruction to call me out if I ever did anything that they'd estimate would make Picard disappointed in my leadership.

Someone brought up some harry Potter fanfic which apparently and bizarrely motivating the philosophy of peter thiel and his ilk.

I read the synopsis, and (regardless of your feeling on generations) is essentially extolling the philosophy of the bad guy in that movie.

Picard, reflecting: "Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives, but I'd rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment, because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived. After all Number One, we're only mortal."

Damn. I knew he was old, but I didn't know he was ill. Alzheimer's and Lewy body dementia, apparently.

[–] dalekcaan@feddit.nl 73 points 4 days ago

The article I read describes it as a "short battle," so presumably he didn't have it for long. Probably for the best for him not to have to drag it out, but still. Horrible news.

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 56 points 4 days ago (6 children)

I've seen speculation that he chose to go out on his own terms.

Assisted dying is legal in California.

Multiple places reporting he died to "live music" surrounded by family.

Sounds planned

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 22 points 4 days ago (7 children)

It's the same thing Robin Williams had, so I wouldn't be surprised. I'm glad he could go peacefully.

Fuck. I grew up with TNG and a single mother. His performance as Picard was about the closest I had to a male role model for a long time. Goodbye, Sir.

[–] Vogons@fedinsfw.app 37 points 4 days ago (3 children)

That was exactly my origin story too. I'm now a physics professor at a world leading University in no small part because of him.

I want to write something to the family. No idea if there's going to be a tribute book anywhere but I would love to contribute if so. I wrote in Hawking's at Gonville and Caius...

Every obit will mention his roles as Picard and Professor X. Let's celebrate his other awesome roles, like Uriel Septim VII in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, or just being himself as he read Shakespearean sonnets each night to the world during COVID lockdown. Or my personal favorite, his scene in Extras that still makes me laugh.

He was a terrific Gurney Halleck in Lynch's Dune.

And honestly, from everything I've heard about the man, he was just an all-around lovely person. Caring and supportive of anyone who had the good fortune to know him.

[–] AnarchistArtificer@lemmy.world 35 points 4 days ago

A fun fact I enjoy about his role as Uriel Septim is that apparently he was given a large booklet (90 pages apparently) of notes on his character's background, motivations, the world's wider lore, as well as notes that linked into roles Stewart had played before. The Oblivion team were worried that they'd overload him with too much information, but Stewart was, in fact, delighted by all the details, and remarked that he wished all of his roles would give him so much to work with.

I somehow thought he’d just live forever, I guess.

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 33 points 4 days ago

He will. In all of our memories.

Man, that sucks. An absolute legend. There are few people, fictional or real, who had a more profound influence on my outlook on life, humanity, and what's good in this world than he did in his role as Captain Picard.

RIP, mon capitaine. You will be missed.

What no? There is so many shitheads around his age (and some also MUUUUCH unhealthy looking) that could die and instead he dies?

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Bro he was 86. It's not like he was too young to go.

[–] pjwestin@lemmy.world 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Shatner's still alive, so it feels weird that Picard is gone.

RIP Patrick. He had one hell of impact as an actor.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 29 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not just an actor. He was one of the greatest human beings.

And you just know that Ian McClellan is going to follow soon because spouses always tend to follow soon after. Damn.

Oh Captain! My Captain.

I can’t…

I had to put together a deck for work and they said “add some personal themes”. Mine was all Trek. He was leading every slide.

My stomach hurts. My heart hurts. I’m literally in tears.

Wil Wheaton lost a man who was more of a father to him than his real dad.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Captain Picard was a fictional role model for me as a kid, since I had a shit upbringing. It hurts me to see him gone, so I can only imagine how hard it is for Will.

I'm an atheist. Sometimes I come across the question of where I get my morality. I often refer to TNG in my mind. What would Picard do? He would ask his crew for information, assess the situation, and give orders.

So much of my right and wrong came from his portrayal of that character. Today is a black day.

Oh fuck. Was not ready for this news today. Captain Picard was basically my childhood idol. I had a shitty childhood, but I wouldn't be the person I am today without Captain Picard and Mr. Rogers. Now both are gone, but I won't forget them.

Godspeed and Engage, Sir Patrick Stewart. You are loved and will be missed.

I'm not a huge Star Trek fan but this quote has comforted me my whole life.

https://youtu.be/t4A-Ml8YHyM?is=oBGsT2HwESdyNsxZ

"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose."

Yeah, this is totally unacceptable. Someone needs to fix this immediately.

Doesn't matter how. Make it a misreported rumor. Make it a hoax. Dabble in some dark arts even thought they called you "mad" whatever.

None of that matters. Sir Patrick Stewart can make any material you give him work...

I had no idea he was so old, mostly because he never seemed like it.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 24 points 4 days ago

More like he always seemed like it. In Next Generation he was only in his 40s and 50s but seemed so much older.

[–] TheArtfulLlama@lemmy.world 28 points 4 days ago

This one sucks. One of my friends had him crash her wedding. She had an outdoor wedding and he was filming Wolverine nearby. He was out on a jog and stopped by, congratulated her and her husband and got some pics with him. Total gentleman and very kind. Pouring out some earl gray for my homie tonight.

[–] niko_@sh.itjust.works 24 points 4 days ago

This one hurts. He was taken by the same disease that Robin Williams had...

My condolences to those affected by his loss. RIP.

[–] GirthBrooksPLO@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago

This year has been a continuous ass beating

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (3 children)

And now I'll always feel a tingle of sadness when I drink my earl grey.
