Strange times to live through when even your goyslop gets a dose of enshittification.

The free market has spoken. There just isn't enough demand for rice grains in the rice crispies. It's simple economics.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

Smart. Should also raise the price, just to be sure

A spokeswoman for Kellogg’s said: “We have updated the Rice Krispies and Coco Pops recipes, which are now made using corn flour and rice flour.

“This recent change helps us maintain consistent quality at a time when changing weather conditions are affecting the quality and availability of some of the rice and grains used in our cereals.

“We appreciate that even small changes to a much-loved product can feel noticeable and that’s why we have approached this with a lot of care and consideration.

How about address climate mitigation with pollution-belching factories and logistics?! 🤯

An entire whole half of the world eats rice in large quantities. I don't believe this bullshit about "weather conditions". This is just ol' fashioned enshittification, using some excuse to justify it.

The other part of this that's notable is they're substituting in corn in place of rice. Corn production is heavily subsidised in the states. This is also part of the reason why there's so much high fructose corn syrup in their food and they turn a ton of corn into ethanol.

You should believe it. Between global warming, overworked soil, deforestation, drought, water waste, water pollution, and lack of fertilizer, we better do something yesteryear. Today is the next best time.

[–] farfalla@jlai.lu 5 points 17 hours ago

They don't even acknowledge global warming/climate change, it's just the weather 😅

[–] MufinMcFlufin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Accepting that global warming is real is not mutually exclusive with doubting it's the sole or even primary cause for this change.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 20 hours ago

Exactly. Of course global warming is one of the biggest problems we haven't tackled yet. But, also, corpos do this shit all the time where they misdirect the excuse for their cost-cutting actions.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 0 points 20 hours ago

No one said it's not.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because that's the job of government, not business.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 7 points 1 day ago

Because business can't be proactive. You know what's great for roi? More live customers.

[–] Amuro_eat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 66 points 1 day ago

Now they’re just reshaped packing peanuts

[–] Wild_Mastic@lemmy.world 48 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They replaced it with another natural ingredient that fills even more, and that ingredient is wood.

[–] xep@discuss.online 12 points 1 day ago

Extra fibre.

[–] Siethron@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Back to sawdust?

[–] Carighan@piefed.world 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Holupaminit, I thought this was a figure of speech! They meant "changing weather conditions" literally, as in, the rice grains don't work for them as an ingredient any more due to poor quality? WTF?!

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 14 points 1 day ago

Welcome to some direct effects of climate change.

So it's just gonna be "Krispies" now? How are Snap, Crackle, and Pop taking being fired?

[–] ishartdoritos@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 hours ago

They’re starting a podcast.

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Uh, so what are they now, just sugar and vitamins?

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 44 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They’re taking rice flour not whole grain rice and apparently aren’t gluten free anymore

[–] Saffire@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago

Also adding corn flour to the mixture as well.

[–] plateee@piefed.social 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

But like, rice crispy bars were the one sweet "baked" good that anyone could make for gluten free needs...

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Uhhh rice crispies have never been gluten free tough? The malt flavor is derived from barley and contains gluten.

[–] plateee@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Shit, did my mam lie to me all these years, lolol

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

According to the article, they've previously been labeled as "may contain gluten" do to being processed in a facility that makes other things with gluten, so they were probably fine for non-celiac gf folks. Now it's actually part of the ingredients, so that's over.

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You would think with something like rice they would have a warning that it may contain gluten, people assume too much. But that’s also why stuff is labeled as gluten free if it is and designed so.

If they’re anything like my parents, they just choose to accept what they want and don’t want to be corrected -.-

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know if the article is true, but the article did mention there was a warning on the package.

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It’s not listed on the package I have, Canada usually has better labeling too, but the article says “may contain” because it’s produced in factories that produce gluten, they don’t even talk about the malt flavoring having gluten.

Edit, interestingly, the Rice Krispies treat bar lists “barley malt extract” and specifies it contains barley.

[–] ZoDoneRightNow@kbin.earth 6 points 1 day ago

rice bubbles are still GF, but coco pops now contain gluten.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 23 points 1 day ago

Everything will be corn and you'll like it, god dammit.

[–] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago
[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Oh boy, gluten in another thing I occasionally eat. Fuck yourself, Kelloggs.

[–] Melonpoly@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

They've always had gluten in them though... same with corm flakes.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They've never been gluten-free, tho.

[–] scutiger@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Previously, Rice Krispies and Coco Pops were labelled “may contain gluten” because they were made in a factory where other cereals containing gluten were also handled.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That, and the fact that they've been flavored with barley this whole time.

[–] scutiger@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Malt flavor can also be made from corn or rice.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Super ka duper mega, to the max El nino will affect grain throughout the world. I'm assuming that's what's happening.

[–] PineRune@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So are they going to just call them "Krispies" now?

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Considering they're still made of rice? I don't see why.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago
