I feel more pressure in how big of a case I need to buy on Amazon than which watch to get

The MoonSwatch was cool cause the colors made sense and actually looked good. None of the Blancpain colors look good.

The 2023 Rolex Yachtmaster Ref. 226627 is my new grail watch. I love the way the "raised" bezel looks vs. the usual Submariner bezel. But right now, I'm looking for watches with that similar raised bezel to bide my time on the waitlist. (No Seiko mod recommendations please)

Thanks!

EDIT:

So far I've found,

Are the dials all the same or are there variations?

I prefer the YM’s bezel to the Sub’s. Not a fan of this particular dial colorway though

Low cost/Chinese homage watches are a low risk way to help downselect between 2 high price watches where you’re unable to buy both.

I’d think a more apt comparison using cars would be paying someone to photoshop your current car in a different paint job/vinyl wrap, or new rims. Its expensive to paint/wrap a car or buy new rims but a good photoshop job is relatively less expensive than getting it done for real and would give you a good feel of how the light would interact with the new color.

I’d think this is a more apt comparison because in a test drive you’re able to go through all the motions you’d normally do in a car. At an AD trying on the real thing, yes you get the feel, weight, overall “heft” of the piece which is important, but you’re restricted to how it looks with the outfit you have on at the AD. You’re unable to test out how it feels when you need to wash your hands, bring in the groceries, or do any normal daily activities with the watch on.

I was on the “just buy a Rolex” train if you’re considering Tudor but after reading more into it, Rolex has brand recognition which is usually a good thing but it can also be a bad thing:

Some comments I’ve seen here are “try asking for a raise in a Rolex” or “If I see someone wearing a Rolex, idk if they’re really into watches or just wants to tick the “bought a Rolex” off the life goals list.”

Wearing a Tudor, sure, youre probably gonna get the “it’s not a Rolex” write off from the lay person but to watch folks, theyll likely know that you know exactly what you’re wearing. Almost like a secret handshake

Everyone says “try it on at the AD” but you can’t walk out and see how that watch fits into your daily routine. Nor try on different outfits with the watch at an AD. I think dropping $100 on an homage watch to “test drive” it with your daily routine and different outfits is a reasonable cost when some of these watches go for $5,000+

I think Chinese homage watches have their place especially when needing to decide between 2 high-dollar watches and when buying both is financially out of reach. I’d buy the 2 watches from Pagani Design and wear them and see which one I gravitate toward over time and use that experience to purchase the real thing.

I use “history” loosely since G-Shock, Casio F91W come to mind and I don’t think those have as rich a history as some Swiss watches do

I can name companies obviously from Switzerland but also Germany, Japan, France, Belgium, Italy, and the UK but need to Google which ones actually build and assemble the watches stateside.

Is it marketing? Lack of experience?

Great value: Glycine Airman. Rich heritage with Vietnam pilots and Pete Conrad with Gemini 5 and 11

I think Omega is giving X-33s to astronauts. Unsure though pure speculation on my part since it seems like an odd choice for an astronaut to personally have since we all know the Moonwatch

too busy.

Agree. I’ve been on a Glycine romp recently and the Airman I think is the “busiest” I can handle while still being legible. It’s a 24 hour watch after all so there’s 13-24 you need to make space for on the dial

Shoutouts to the Glycine

My current ranking for Submariner-style watches are Rolex at the top, Tudor in 2nd, and then Glycine in 3rd.

Glycine gets a spot on the podium since they have a Swiss heritage going back to 1914 and despite the Invicta acquisition in 2016, by all accounts it seems that their quality hasn’t degraded.

Are there any other Swiss brands with heritage that are better choices for that 3rd place spot?
