Hey guys,

Had a really sad day in my HP journey when I returned my favorite cans -- the Arya Stealths. You see, I couldn't get rid of inner ear discomfort after like 5-10 minutes of use, even at lowest volume, and even EQ'd, despite everything I tried.

To isolate whether it was pads or sound, I wore the pads without sound and it felt fine. Shortly after putting some music on -- in any genre, even at low levels, boom, I felt the discomfort in both ears. And what a shame, because they sounded so unbelievably perfect to me -- airy, wide soundstage, great tonality, just beautiful...

I found a thread by u/Sproketz who described the same thing. He ported bass-holes into the pads to relieve low-freq pressure and it worked for him. Sadly, it did not resolve the issue for me, although it did seem to help a bit.

I'm now debating whether I will have this issue with all oval-shaped planars. Currently debating ordering either the Arya Organics or the HE1000SE. Worth a shot or hopeless?

For reference, I own Focal Elexes, Sundaras, Audeze LCD-X, etc, and none of them have ever given me issues.

after 4 years of daily use and occasional awkward bends, right side audio is dead and drop doesn’t have stock for replacement cables. Looking for where I can find a good replacement for $60 max.

I cannot buy from hart audio(says no shipping available to South Africa) and I also cannot buy from Periapt($60 dollar shipping)

I have a Nocs NS900 with a broken headphone cable. The cable features a proprietary 3.5mm skinny* locking connector on the headphone side and a "standard" 3.5mm connector (with a 6.3mm screw-on adapter) on the DAC side.

*The outer diameter of the skinny headphone terminating connector is 7.5mm.

Since Nocs are incredibly unresponsive and seem unable to provide replacement parts (I've been emailing them for several months now), I wanted to ask if you guys know of any headphones that might have a similar cable that I could buy and eventually somehow make to fit the NS900?

The music in my gym is absolutely horrendous and I wanted ear buds with ANC that will cancel out every last bit of it. I paid $300 for these earbuds but while it does muffle the music a bit it still doesn't completely blank out the music. Are there some settings that are wrong or are there no earbuds that will completely block the music? Will changing the eartips to completely noise isolating ones help or do I have to go for over the ear headphones to completely muffle out the music?

Just spotted these from Amazon with a $200 coupon, looks like they have been $380 in the past but this is the lowest I've seen since then.

I know these weren't super well received on release but it seems like this might be a good deal. Do you all think they are worth it at this price point?

I know many of you don't believe that cable swapping is worth it for sound quality unless switching to balanced. Considering that HD6XX is a rebranding of 650 and costs 200$ less, the cable would be an obvious compromise. So I ordered the HD650's official replacement cable. I was not going to expect any massive changes to sound, but was still curious to try out. I tested with FiiO K5 Pro and 320kbs mp3 files (not a high end setup, but certainly not bad).

The 650's cable determinates to 6.5mm jack instead of 6XX's 3.5mm without the adapter. I don't know if using the adapter could affect the quality of signal.

As for the sound difference between 6XX and 650 cables: As expected, the difference was not dramatic, but noticeable by trained ears. The bass response sounded tighter and punchier with 650 cable. This made music in general sound slightly cleaner and more dynamic.

But realistically, the cable switch is not at all necessary with 6XX. But if you want a tigher bass to improve clarity, the 650 cable could give you just a tiny improvement.

I use a Sony 1000XM3 at 16% volume for about 2 hours a day with ANC off. Will I go deaf if do that everyday? I have never used headphones before this in my life. I am in my teens. My parents say that I will go deaf.

Hi guys,

Long time lurker, started my product research on Reddit years ago and I thought I'd finally contribute back. I've been using Pentaconn's Coreir brass tips for my Campfire Audio Andromeda 2020. I won't get technical in this piece because this is not an in-depth review but instead just a nerdy sharing. There are plenty of reviews like this one if you want to know more. https://www.spill.hk/headphones/Pentaconn-Coreir-Brass-review/

Having come from shitty, random silicone tips that don't confirm to the ear canal, I can say these tips are the exact opposite. The tips themselves are very sticky (they don't fall out of your ear easily), high quality pieces. You can tell that Pentaconn really engineered the hell out of these things.

This little innovation is quite unique, the brass core really takes the treble to the moon, though at the slight expense of bass. I'm a treble head, so I have no complaints. I've paired them with the legendarily sparkly Andromeda 2020s, and the results are quite staggering. I didn't imagine I could make these sparkle even more. Cymbals and guitar distortion sounds cleaner. Think hitting a metal trash can with a wooden stick vs with a metal stick (Slipknot goes brrrr). High frequencies really do cut through. Silicone tips make everything sound "softer" in terms of quality, not volume wise.

In my opinion, they fantastic for Metal, Classical, Jazz and Electronic, or any other genre with many layers. That being said, they don't do as well as regular tips for genres where bass is paramount to the entire vibe of the song such as Hip Hop/Rap, Dubstep or Dreampop. That's not to say they don't sound good, in fact they do-- just that the added treble takes away from the warm lows. The Pentaconn Coreir really makes the sound signature slightly clinical. I would imagine someone with a pair of notoriously muddy Shure SE846s who are unable to sell/return them might appreciate knowing that these may help with the annoying muddiness.

I've been using the Pentaconn Coreir for approx. 6 months now. I spend roughly 2-3 hours per day with them at the office. Alas, inorganic chemistry comes to haunt me years after I've left college. My beloved pair of $20 Pentaconn Coreirs have developed an unsightly patina! It doesn't seem to have affected the sound quality, but indeed they aren't a sight for sore eyes, in fact they are instead a sore sight for eyes.

See the green tinge? It is only present one piece, oddly.

The other piece weren't spared either, they have instead developed a dark, brownish layer instead.

It should be mentioned that the brass does not come into contact with the nozzle, so my beloved Andromedas were not affected.

The one thing that comes to mind as the potential culprit is exposure to water. I occasionally wash my eartips with water and soap to rid of the oils and wax buildup in the nozzle. It seems that this may have caused the patina to form. I store my earphones in a pouch with silica gel too, but I guess it wasn't enough to mitigate the moisture and I should've known better. Frankly, its a bit upsetting that this isn't something accounted for by the engineers considering the selling price is around US$40/box of two pairs at where I'm at. Hence, I've gone out bought another box!

A bit of advice for those who have these eartips, check if do they have patina forming. It can cause irritation in the inner ear which would cause discomfort. If you have to wash your eartips (or any electronics, use isopropyl alcohol!

I'm comparing these to my my old Sony WH-1000XM4 which I bought for the noise cancellation; They do sound clearer/better in the mids or just overall, I don't have any negative to say about the sound per se. I'd like more bass though, and personally I like closed ones so I feel more isolated from the world.

But my point here is that honestly 600 dollars for this is already going into snake oil territory for me. They don't sound that different. And the materials and construction is fucking simple, it's plastic, foam, synthetic pads/polyester(?), very basic stuff. I could see these being sold for 30 bucks from china. And this is not a dig at these headphones specifically.

I'm very specific about image quality. Audio quality I can't feel the same way about, it is somehow half snake oil and half legit quality differences. I think what it boils down to is people make too much of a fuss about tiny audio differences.

TLDR: Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro broke twice, looking for a similar replacement that is more durable.

Hello, I got a Beyerdynamic 990 back in 2019, and used it until it broke in 2021. The headphone was extremely comfortable and I liked that the coiled wire stretched easily, so I got the DT990 PRO. The PRO is still comfy as hell, and I love it, but there is one component on my headset that keeps breaking. At first, the inside plastic plate (where the screws attach) broke, so I looked online but couldn't find any replacements. I scavenged the plates from my old 990 and it worked until the outer plate broke, and now the headphone is nigh unusable as it pokes into my head, even though there is nothing wrong with the sound quality. Can someone recommend either a Beyerdynamic or something similar that doesn't have this vulnerability?

I bought the Sennheiser HD 6XX but I hate it. It's like putting your head in a vise. People who enjoy the 6XX either have tiny heads, or steel skulls.

Like the title says I am planning on purchasing some bluetooth headphones.

I use an ipad and iphone for work/school and I have an apple tv as well. I got gifted a pair of airpods pro 2 as a birthday present and I really like using those since they have spatial audio with the apple tv. But unfortunately for those long movie watches or just leaving the tv running for a little bit while in bed the airpods start to hurt a lot.

From what I've researched and tested it seems like the Momentum 4s have the highest audio quality but if I wanted to use them for the Apple Tv would they have the same spatial audio as the maxes.

Wanted to know if anyone else has tested this and knows how the M4s fair against the Maxes for the apple ecosystem and what the other pros and cons might be.

There are two things I'm talking about here. One is that I think the warring audio factions might be talking about two very different things (although the FR ppl seem to think there's only one thing?). The other is which one I think is more important. It's a wall of words, and in the end I'm not sure if I truly understand it myself so I'm probably gonna get torn to shreds for suggesting it.

I probably should use the word "timing" instead of "time domain"

I think I personally value the timing realm more than the frequency (pitch) realm. The audio engineers are right... you can only discern so much in terms of pitch. It's 20 - 20,000 and even that's generous considering 16,000 is already the limit for lots of older listeners. They're also right that there are psychoacoustic things about sound. BUT I wonder if they forget about the timing when it comes to audio, because from what I can tell all 'measurements' when it comes to audio, are related to the Frequency Response (pitch) and not timing. A visual equivalent might be Audio is Color Spectrum and timing is "Frames Per Second".

Maybe all the in-fighting over the topic is this mis-understanding? On the one side you have the equivalent of FR people focusing on the 'color reproduction' saying "You can't even see Infrared light!" or "If you adjust the color, then the two pictures are exactly the same". But then team "timing" is talking about resolution and motion fidelity, not necessarily color reproduction.

For example. How do we determine the location of sounds? The difference in timing between when audio reaches the left and right ears. It can be as low as 10 microseconds according to this article:

https://www.sciencefocus.com/science/why-is-there-left-and-right-on-headphones

Another article mentions that humans can detect even less than 10 microseconds (3 - 5 microseconds?) of timing difference:

https://phys.org/news/2013-02-human-fourier-uncertainty-principle.html

So many things can be explained by this. Spatial Cues like staging and imaging. Transients and Textures depend on the speed of changes in frequency, not the frequencies themselves. I think those same things help in determining how detailed & resolving things seem and relate to micro and macro dynamics. It's known that if you compare a piano note to a guitar note... it's the brief attack characteristics, the pluck vs the hammer, that clue us into which sound comes from which instrument. I think all of the "life-like" things are mostly in timing dependent vs frequency or pitch.

From what I can tell... the things that make Hi-Fi gear stand out from just the cheapest gear with good EQ applied, are tied to the timing. I've been lucky enough to go to a Can Jam before and listened to very expensive things and everything below in terms of price. To my ears, there IS a difference and it didn't matter what the price tag said, I wasn't gonna buy the expensive stuff anyways... I just wanted to hear the differences for myself.

I've listened to things that "measure perfectly", like the near perfect Dan Clark Stealth and Dan Clark Expanse. DC uses meta materials to help dampen and "shape" the sound and coincidently measure nearly perfect to the Harman Curve. I've listened to many Chi-Fi DACs and AMPs that also measure perfectly (they all use mounds of negative feedback). And to my ears, those are some of the most boring and life-less things to listen to.

** So in my opinion, faithful reproduction of Frequency is NOT the holy grail. You can EQ things anyway you like and I agree that EQ is excellent! It changes the sound more than most things. But good FR performance is cheap in my opinion and that's great. What's not widely available are things that perform well in the timing. From what I can tell, that's what people pay up for.

I'd be interested to see if one day the industry starts creating ways to measure time-domain performance. In my analogy above I use the metaphor of "Frames Per Second", but timing changes can also be represented in Hz. In the first article, Humans can use timing cues as small as 10 microseconds (μs) which equates to 100,000 Hz in order to position a sound source. In the second article, Humans can detect changes as small as 3 μs. The article mentions 13x to 10x better time difference detection than expected so if 3 μs is on the extreme 13x side that means the other participants were closer to 4 μs or the 10x figure. Going by the 4 μs figure, that would equate to 250,000 Hz resolution. It's not about pitch, it's about changes in the audio.

does a small amount of sweat corrosion on the drivers from being sweated on for a while not impact longevity of the drivers in the long run as long as they're still functional and the individual doesn't sweat on them again in the future?

I ordered Audeze Maxwell on Hifi headphones Canada and I am trying to cancel my order.

Since there is no option on the website, I am trying to reach out their customer service for 2 weeks now without any answers.

Did anyone has any experiences with their customer service? Is it normal that it’s taking that much time?

Thanks for your help!

I see a lot of variance on people's amp recommendations for products. It seems to me like a clean 1W into 32Ω is enough to drive the majority of headphones to 120db, which is extraordinarily loud to the point of being unlistenable. Tons of middle-tier desktop amps can handle going over 5W per channel at the same impedance and some even go over 10W. Are these wattages actually useful for anything? What wattage would set you up for any headphone, regardless of budget?

I've been looking for a audiophile DAC, specifically was researching the Mojo2 when I came across a video talking about the mac dongle being better than it, total prick of a review and in the comments too.
But that got me thinking and so I plugged in my HD800 into the headphone out, apple music lossless stock. Soundstage and timbre is much better, the hardness has gone away, much more musical, I've been switching back and forth on the same passages over and over again, this is nuts.

I have a Lehmann BCL that I run with the RME, it can't compete with the power of the BCL but that's to be seen tomorrow when I find my leads to hook it up the MBP. I auditioned it via the BLC and the RME directly, going round robin.

The MBP sounds best. I need the RME for recording duties etc but I'm rather surprised, in a good way, I've had the mac for a year, a free upgrade!

This has been an issue with on ear foam pad headphones like the Koss Porta Pros. The headphones are awesome but over time the foam cover wears out due to typical use. Replacements are readily available, but the process of getting them on the headphones tends to stretch them out and then they constantly shift and fall off.

When headphones like this ship from the factory, the foam cover feels firm and taught around the edges. They must have gotten that on somehow and I can't help but feel like there's a trick to replacing the pads that I haven't come across yet.
Any tips?

I though about how the HD600 is loved by everyone, but often in subjective hobbies there is a counter that does the opposite. I thought anout it but no extremely wide, closed back, V-shaped came to my mind.
