On a lathe? Doesn't make sense. Maybe on a crucible or dewar or something...

[–] brap@lemmy.world 47 points 8 months ago (5 children)

Man, a lathe will fuck you up if things go awry.

Sometimes I throw the chuck just to feel something.

I've had several thousand deducted from my pay to fix the ceiling.

Employee breaks something: loses money equal to the damage

Employee makes something: gains money far below profits

It's amazing how easily capitalists understand the value you bring to the company... only when it's negative.

I lathe in my underwear only since watching that video.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Seems like you should keep the lathe out of your underwear, TBH.

I'm like a Ken doll.

Make sure it's leather as well

[–] SidewaysHighways@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago (2 children)

You saw that one too?

I'm really nervous around them these days that's for sure

Took a machining class, could barely drill a 3/16"(I think?) at 2000rpm cause that video scared me so much

[–] Cypher@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

Mind sharing the video?

[–] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 months ago

Oh definitely. However the warning joke appears to imply that even attempting to use it will alter you in some comic supervillain sense or something.

I doubt the part of the statement before the "but," not the part after it.

I am a career machinist. I have witnessed a lathe accident so bad that everyone was sent home for a month. Don't wear gloves when operating a lathe.

I am not a career machinist -- but I have a tiny manual 10" lathe and I'm terrified of it.

I got a 5 inch cordless bandsaw recently. It's fucking gnarly. Yes I'm scared of it and I should be. By the way if you ever need a body disassembled...

Seriously though even little stuff can fuck you up. My friend was using my 20v hammer drill to put a hole in a wall in a tight spot and it caught something and spun. He got knocked in the chin by the belt clip. He couldn't eat normally for a month.

Saw a pic once. Learned my lesson the easy way.

"Juiced" is a state.
