I was thinking today, I’ve seen talks about people entering their prime at really old ages, like Karl Malone for example. But that made wonder, who hit the peak of their career at the younger ages? For example, micheal carter Williams practically peaked in his rookie year.

Rose had a young prime.

I’m curious when people feel Bron’s prime started. Cuz he was already elite by Year 2 at 19 in the 2004-2005 season, but he clearly was a better player in say 2008, but he was even better in 2009 and 2010 than he was in 2008.

Well... prime is when a player is at their peak, so I think you are starting to answer your own question.

[–] DetrimentalContent@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s a fair thought. Prime and peak are two seperate things, and LeBron’s probably had the longest prime of any player in the NBA. The question is when it started.

Derrick Rose and Brook Lopez are two players I’d argue had their peaks outside of their primes for example.

Tmac was one of the youngest hall of famers. Short and young prime for him

[–] Charlie_Wax@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

T-Mac didn't have a short prime. He was 6'8".

His prime was simultaneously the earliest and shortest. Essentially one game as I recall.

he was good in Detroit until tearing his achilles

Tyreke Evans really did peak his rookie year

[–] Soul0103@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

MCW peaked his first game

[–] pokexchespin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

he had a random second peak on the grizzlies in like 2018, he was a weirdly solid three point shooter and back up around 20/5/5 again. shame he was back to meh the next year in indy and then got busted for drug use right after

[–] prematurely_bald@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I remember watching a documentary back in the day with Tyreke and others hoping to make it big one day. Kinda crazy how it actually turned out for most of them.

I know it’s unfair to bring up his name hear because he had a great overall career and has great longevity as well, but in terms of individual awards, Kevin Durant was kind of an early bloomer.

He was the NBA scoring champ in 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2014, at age 21-25. He never won it after that again. He was in the Top-2 of the MVP Awards in 2010, 2012, 2013 & 2014, at age 21-25. He never was in the Top-3 after that again. He was in the All NBA First Team from 2010-2014, at age 21-25. He reached the First Team only once after that (in 2018 at age 29).

So in terms of individual success, at least in the regular season, KD had an early prime.

I like this analysis, but then I also remember him carrying the Olympic team to gold in 2020 (really 2021). He was easily the best player on a team full of All-Star/HoF types.

I actually think a lot of his "decline" could just be explained by Steph Curry happening. Warriors took over the conference and then KD joined them a couple years later. All of that hurt his individual accolades, apart from the two FMVPs, which you didn't mention.

[–] Beautiful_Ad55@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Injuries also played a role.

Would you consider him a better basketball player in 2010-2014 than in 2017-2018?

Kinda stunned no one's said Dwight Howard. By 26, he had racked up 8xAll Star, 8xAll NBA including 5 straight first teams, 3x DPOY, 5x Rebounding champ, 2x block champ, and a finals appearance. By 28, he was essentially a washed-up big body to throw at other centers, bouncing around team to team barely clinging to the league.

[–] Hanhonhon@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It largely had to do with him hurting his back and being pressured to come back (*cough* Kobe) way too soon

[–] WestleyThe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (27 children)

He could’ve retired at 26 and would’ve been a HOF

Scam Reddish. His high school mixtape made him $20M.

[–] spacefish420@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

First time hearing that nickname. I like it lol

[–] yung_eldorado@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

blake griffin had one early prime in years 1-4, and then another when he went to detroit. granted, he was improving skill-wise the whole time, but his athletic dominance went down as years progressed, and was eventually replaced by a refined skillset in y2 at Detroit. sham how things turned out with his knees.

he's my favorite player, and i have never seen him play in person, and now it looks like i never will

Chris Paul had an all time great career with elite longevity but his peak was 08 or 09, when he was 22/23.
