A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I'm a hobbyist who enjoys street and landscape photography, and after getting diminishing returns and burn out by posting on Instagram, my photos started amassing in my lightroom library - never to be seen by anyone! I have a website (Adobe Portfolio), but I rarely use it, and it doesn't bring me that much joy.

I recently came across Substack, which is a newsletter/blog type website where you can create long form content, and in my case, photo essays and commentary. This has been a really satisfying alternative to posting on social media - I enjoy writing and it feels like I'm putting more intention behind my work. I think Substack will take off, and I enjoy the niche community of photographers on it.

How are you sharing your photos these days? And, if you're not, why not? What do you think the future is for sharing photography?

And if you're a Substacker already - I'd love to follow you! If this subreddit allows it, drop your Substack below :)

FB mainly, share in local pages for local events, car clubs for local meets.

Insta for my favourites

Made a subreddit for ones I think make good desktop wallpapers 😅

Some online on my website, some on social media (most of the times these two option don't match in terms of which shots i chose to upload) and 80+% offline.

I’m not looking for external approval. It’s so hollow and doesn’t get you any further. I don’t share online. I make books and when I really enjoy the one I’ve made, I print 4 or 5 copies to give away.

[–] onlyamonth@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ive been wanting to do something like this, what service do you use for making the books please?

[–] Garrett_1982@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I used a lot, but I enjoy Saal print quality and book quality most. Pretty cheap too.

There are a bunch of competitions, also you could put together a local gallery show, or print a zine! Online isn't the only way to get photos out there.

I invite all my friends over then we watch a powerpoint presentation of my monthly slides.

When I pause awkwardly, they know it’s time to clap. Then I switch to the next slide.

[–] Imaginary-Put-7202@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

How about discreetly putting the slideshow on in the background then getting angry when no one spontaneously compliments a picture

[–] Thurmod@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

the fbi would like to know your location

[–] Stewart2017@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This made me unreasonably happy, lol. It also gave me flashbacks to my grandparents getting out the projector to show old family movies

I took time to work on my Adobe Portfolio site since it’s included in the subscription I paid for. When it’s mostly complete, I made a QR code for it that I show to prospective clients I talk to.

The artsy ones I post in social media, with a writeup, with relevant tags and hashtags.

Instagram is pushing reels and post captions thus rewarding profiles that can retain eyes longer.

Unless you are ready to start posting reels and expand into video, you should pump the brakes on high expectations from Instagram.

That said, I flood the market myself, since my goal is to grow. Reddit, Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, Flickr, Youtube.

[–] Stelljanin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah I don’t use Instagram anymore. I was getting addicted and I just don’t care for sharing photos there. I feel a lot better about my photography now that I’m not seeking validation through social media

I've used Zenfolio as a blog for over ten years now, and I have so much material on there that it's not worth the effort to change. During a period when their website was behaving very erratically, I considered switching to a different place, but before I could get serious about it, they sorted the website out.

I put up a blog post roughly three weeks in every four, share links to my various social medias, and then focus on the next post. The numbers aren't of particular importance to me.

[–] ptq@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Some of my work is showed to my friends before I send it back to the client, so I have some extra pairs of eyes judging the photos. Then from time to time I post something on instagram, mostly when I do photos for fun.

[–] MeddlinQ@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't. I print, for myself.

It's been a while since I realized noone cares about my photography and that's fine.

I had this same realization about my photography when I realized I dont care much for other people's as well (for the most part)

[–] WombatMcGeez@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like https://glass.photo — definitely much more focused on art than engagement, and a great community to both get feedback and find inspiration

[–] FrankieSolemouth@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'm really enjoying glass as well tbh

[–] Wonnk13@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

glass.photo one of the few apps worth paying for.

I’m one of those photographers who generally hates their own photos. Even though wife and family loves what I do/capture, I just think it’s ‘meh’. I don’t share often because when I get praise I’ll usually think ‘yeahhh righhht…’

[–] pnkdjanh@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I show it to people on my phone screen and they'll go wow and that's it.

I don’t share them. I think i enjoy filling images away into little folders on my laptop more than showing them to people.

Markets! I sell my prints. Hoping to get into a gallery soon.

[–] BeefJerkyHunter@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Eh, I just post on Instagram, Facebook, and my blog. For the most part, the attention I want most is on Facebook since that's where the people that matter to me are.

[–] oprahhaza@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I do it full-time and use Shootproof to deliver to clients. Slick gallery, emails, and integrated cart that works well. I also use it to archive past shoots as it's very cheap.

[–] AKaseman@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Pretty much Instagram only. I’m posting the most I’ve ever posted in the last decade and my works the best it’s ever been and I’m getting the least amount of views ever. Went from around 200-300 views on stories to about 80. Post likes used to be front loaded with likes the moment you post and now my good friends don’t even see my post in their feed for hours. The algorithm is fucked

I'll post my best on Facebook and instagram (for family and friends - I could give a crap about followers) and I keep a Zenfolio (website) gallery going for fun.

[–] CatSusk@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Local Camera club - not 100% satisfying because judges prefer traditional styles, but they also have how-to events. And it’s cheap.

[–] ocelotrevs@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Instagram and tumblr for the most part

[–] puupn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Insta, but might go back to Flickr. Sick of reels and reposts being shoved in my face

[–] Boblikecheez@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Flickr, my google sites website and Instagram (but don’t use reels or hashtags just people i actually know)

[–] jackystack@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't both with IG -- I think their platform format is simply too "busy" and doesn't present images in the context I want my work displayed.

I'll share some things here for the hell of it, but, most of my stuff I have printed. If its a shot I think makes a good centerpiece then I enlarge it -- otherwise I get 4x6 chromogenic prints from the lab.

I type locations and basic info on the back prints and hand them to people, and have recently bought those post-card stickers for 4x6 prints. This way, sharing is meaningful instead of just another picture and a reaction.

[–] Funksavage@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Great discussion. I’m finding Instagram draining. Questioning why I post at all… although the same small group of people seem to appreciate each other’s work.

[–] arabesuku@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

To reach an audience I share on my instagram and post to be website. However, I’m really hoping a new social media platform for sharing photos catches on soon. My instagram insights show my posts only reach about 25% of my followers (I don’t know if this is normal or not). I feel like instagram is becoming more focused on reels or making you pay to get your work seen - it’s frustrating as someone who is trying to break in.

[–] tedikuma@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Despite Instagram being pretty lame, I do find it useful because if I'm shooting an event or location I can tag relevant people or organizations and have them see my work. They usually end up sharing on their end and that's a great way to get more eyes on my images and profile. For example, I've been shooting a lot of burlesque shows recently. I'll tag each performer, they'll share, their burlesque friends will see them, and I'll get hired for even more gigs. It works out.

Outside of that I share on Facebook for my friends and family to see. I've also started printing photo zines at home to sell at zine shows. And having someone complement my work while flipping through my zine is a pretty big ego boost, to be honest. Eventually I'm hoping to have my work displayed somewhere, a small gallery maybe.

[–] TL_Cube@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I have a nice photo album on my coffee table and I order prints after each event I bring my camera to, adding 2-4 photos to the album. I dont bother with sharing online.

Anyone hop on Vero? All the photo influencers where pushing it as the new Instagram since instagram went bad with mostly ads and viral traffic.

I started using Vero for any fine photos, Instagram still gets my posts but I had been really trying to succeeded on Tiktok and YouTube so they got alot of attention.

I had alot of support and interaction on Reddit and Imgur.

I'm also really tempted to start selling on stock photo sites. Then I wouldn't be able to share as much.

[–] Cannonbolt74@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I used to use Vero but it feels really slow compared to Instagram and just not enjoyable for scrolling. So now I'm still sticking to Instagram but I really hate the image compression

[–] grahambinns@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Aside from my website I don’t much. I’m semipro, got some unhelpful feedback at the start of the year which hit my confidence pretty hard, and was in a position where I could just take a break, so I did.

Planning to start doing some personal work and rebuilding over then next few months if I can find the energy.

[–] Patricio_Swayze@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I am reluctantly still on instasham. I don’t care much about validation, but I do enjoy sharing photos. I never left Flickr and I still post everything there and a fraction of that to IG. For awhile IG was pretty good with the self promotion. I have self published a few books and sold a few hundred copies which felt great. However, in the past year or so my IG gets nearly no views. It’s probably something I am doing (or not doing), but it’s not a big deal to me.

[–] mattl101@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't really share much occasionally il post on a few sub Reddits but mostly it's just hanging them up at my mom's house

[–] VladPatton@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Shitstagram and Flickr.

[–] nafregit@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I use flickr. Instagram is too small isn't it?

[–] Garshnooftibah@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I find Flikr pretty great . The free level gives you LOADS of storage. After several years I finally exceeded this limit (have a LOT of albums up that I can send people or look at myself) and I am REALLY hahppy to pay $80 a year or so for unlimited storage.
