The dude Ben Stiller played in Heavyweights is a real guy? :O

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 190 points 1 week ago (7 children)

Important note: This doesn't suddenly mean that Chick-Fil-A and the people who own it are suddenly good guys now.

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 134 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I mean, how many companies are maintaining their DEI programs these days?

I’m not gonna say Chick-fil-A are perfect angels, but the article is about a guy who is upset because one of the locations in Utah celebrated a gay marriage and corporate backed them up. That’s a very different Chick-fil-A than in 2012.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 73 points 1 week ago (5 children)

That happened?! I’m frankly stunned.

also the guy who is upset is literally linked to at least three guys (one of whom was JOSH DUGGAR) who sexually assaulted children.

Surprisingly, Apple. https://www.apple.com/diversity/

Not trying to sound pro-them, to be clear. I just use that page as a Fascism canary.

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’m not surprised by that. Apple does plenty of evil shit, and has straight-up bribed Trump because it’s the wise business move, but they’ve been ostensibly “socially progressive” for most of the company’s history.

Not really. The issue is the corporate overlords at that company donating millions of dollars to shitty things like conversion therapy camps.

They donate to a huge range of shitty things to this day.

They are trash.

Is it possible for Chic-fil-a to ever redeem itself in your eyes?

If they fired everyone involved with every controversy and started donating every cent of profit to LGBT charity groups, would you say they were a good company, or is it once tainted always tainted.

Chic-fil-a has made a lot of changes in the past decade and a half, and I'm of the opinion that, if no amount of self reflection and change can ever make us reconsider our condemnation, then there's no reason for anything to try and change, as it won't stop the hate.

Not that Chic-fil-a is perfect, but I would argue they are now as good or better than any other fast food chain we're not actively hating on. They actually pay their employees more than minimum wage and give them one guaranteed weekend day off if nothing else.

So why continue to put them down now that it's "mission accomplished?" If the goal was for them to change, and they have, it seems that we should bring them back into the fold, no?

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

s it possible for Chic-fil-a to ever redeem itself in your eyes?

I honestly haven't been following them.

Did they ever admit fault? That's big for me. An explicit "we were wrong"

That's the big thing for me. To be forgiven, you must first apologize. Then you must make amends.

And yes, for some harms, there are no amends great enough.

[–] dontsayaword@piefed.social 32 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I think redemption is possible, but I'm skeptical. Will definitely look into this more.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

if no amount of self reflection and change can ever make us reconsider our condemnation, then there's no reason for anything to try and change, as it won't stop the hate

A very important point that we should all remember. It's critical to continue a no-tolerance policy of intolerance, but to accept those who want to change.

I'm not running to Chick-fil-A anytime soon but the point remains.

[–] baronvonj@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

For me it would either take a reversal of all the bullshit deregulation of campaign finance laws, or for all the bigots in the Cathy family to be ousted entirely.

the bar for capitalists pigs is incredibly low...but to give credit where it's do, they atleast pay a halfway decent wage, take basic measures to keep employees safe/healthy (shade/hested spaces in winter, for drive through people), are relatively good in insuring QC in their supply chain, and actually have a pretty generous franchise setup.

admittedly these are things that the overwhelming majority of the West just...insures via basic government regulation, but they sure could be a hell of a lot worse.

alls i'm saying is when/if the Revolution happens, their CEO isnt even in the top 50-100 people that need to get got.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 1 week ago

If you think Chic-Fil-A is woke (not saying you, just people in general), you probably should become a fan of Marjorie Taylor-Greene. She's also suddenly become a huge supporter of Leftist politics and isn't a piece of shit racist. /s

But jackals are cute. 😭

[–] ferrule@sh.itjust.works 43 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I have been boycotting chick-fil-a for decades.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world -1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Are you doing it because their food is terrible?

[–] ferrule@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

No, they have been a big supporter of the shittiest parts of conservatism so they don't get my money.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 19 points 1 week ago

I welcome these maga nuts also supporting the boycott of Chick-fil-A.

Fuck that company for all the millions they contributed to right wing groups who went on anti lgbtqia crusades for the past two decades.

And honestly I don't care why maga is protesting them. Fuck Chick-fil-A.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 42 points 1 week ago

All of this started early last month when MAGA went apeshit because a Utah Chick-fil-A location posted a celebration of a gay couple’s wedding.

Chick-fil-A’s corporate office responded to the backlash with a formal statement emphasizing the company’s commitment to DEI.

Perkins suggests to Newsmax that Chick-fil-A has gone “woke” now that its founder is dead. But S. Truett Cathy died in 2014 at age 93.

How the fuck is respecting people's backgrounds during hiring and employment in contrast to the Christian faith?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 25 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Because those people never made it past the Old Testament. I was forced to attend a Southern Baptist Church during highschool, and the preacher never once had a sermon based on the New Testament.

But they really hate it when you suggest they join a synagogue.

[–] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Weird, I’ve been boycotting Chick-Fil-A for something like 15 years. I legitimately don’t recall how long I’ve been boycotting them. Fuck Chick-Fil-A.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (12 children)

Fuck them for changing corporate policy to what you want it to be?

They deserved hate for their anti-lgbt policies, but if they scrapped that there's no reason for hate anymore.

[–] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Regardless of what corporate does, Dan Cathy is still the chairman. Chick Fil A is what provides his income. He uses that income to fund bullshit Christian Nationalist shit still. I'd rather not be part of the reason he has the funds to do so.

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

You can still hate someone who eventually, under great pressure, finally decided to stop hurting people after having a history of hurting people when they should have known better.

Dramatically proving that most people can't define woke.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 days ago

It's super-woke to define woke.

Hell the guy that owns Menards is another disgusting human being who has been associated with Trump for years. Feel like not many people are aware of that.

How the turns table.

Note: This is not Anthony Perkins, the actor, who died in 1992.

They are not related.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago

Yet somehow this particular Anthony Perkins is more of a ghoul than the dead actor.

Whoever looks to a fastfood company for moral guidance needs to reevaluate their lives.

Don't support hateful groups. Don't support any group in the company's name. Just shut up and serve food.

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Okay, people born before 1980 aren’t allowed to say “Woke” anymore.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago

I think it's stupid for anyone to use it at this point. The word has lost all meaning.

Company changed it's signage? It's woke. Didn't like a movie? It's woke. If you disagree with my comment? Believe it or not... woke.
