/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Star Trek promised us Irish unification two years ago, so I'm not holding my breath

[–] jupyter_rain@discuss.tchncs.de 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I guess this needs to happen for WW3 to start. Clearly.

[–] ragas@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Seeing how all brexit negotioations revolved around ireland, why yes I think it is totally plausible that WW3 is started by some northern irish fisherman fishing a few kilometers too far south.

We already missed the Bell riots.

But we do (did) already have "Sanctuary Cities"

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

did we?

I see a bunch of warehouses burning...

maybe we're going to speed run everything in a few months until we get to WW3.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (3 children)

There are, on average, over four warehouse fires per day in the US. The recent coverage is just media stickiness, similar to the coverage of train derailments a few years ago.

the ones in 1974?

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 42 points 1 week ago (3 children)

On the plus side, the Vulcans then notice us and introduce themselves a couple of decades after the war ends.

C'mon ya green-blooded freaks! Do it early!

C'mon ya green-blooded freaks!

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

And here's how we'll be responding in this universe:

it's only 7% of earth current population. That's not bad right?

[–] starik@lemmy.zip 33 points 1 week ago

WW2 killed about 3% of the world’s population.

[–] albbi@piefed.ca 17 points 1 week ago (3 children)

The ratio of wounded to dead is around 4 to 1.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most people who die in wars are civilians. Especially if WW3 goes nuclear, that would probably be most of them. However that is basically just nuking all major cities in China or so.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I could easily see nukes being dropped on the US, albeit they'd mysteriously only target Blue states and historically Blue cities.

[–] justaman123@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

There's only like 5 red cities and they all have fewer than a million residents. So the blue city moniker basically just means large city

The face you make when you learn trek lore predicts WW3 starts in 2026

Stop the world, I wanna get off.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

For any non-trekkies still living in New Zealand...you may wish to relocate.

That's when you learn we're not in the Star Trek timeline, we're in the Gundam timeline.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And on the 250th bday of the US.

Meh, Ireland is supposed to be reunited by now.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago

I blame the temporal war.

Clearly Irish unification leads to Star Trek timeline equally as much as the forever war, and was easier to prevent.

The Eugenics War and the 2nd American Civil War were supposed to preceded WWIII. When the Bell Riots didn't happen we changed the timeline.

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But we missed the bell riots. We aren't in the federation universe. We're likely in the Teran universe.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

One miiiiight argue that 2020 BLM protests count? In a way? Too early, granted.

Maybe everything that was supposed to happen in the Star Trek universe up to this point is all going happen all at once on December 31, 2026

Dax was born in 2018.

The future seemed so far away back then

Committing to any real world dates was a fundamental misstep. They knew it was a bad idea from the start! That's the whole reason stardates were invented! But they couldn't help themselves.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Counterpoint: they should have just kept real world dates without worrying that they "didn't happen." We all know Star Trek is made up. Stop trying to reconcile it with real history.

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Not my preference. Star Trek was made to be about our future, not the future of an alternate past.

SNW seems to have formalized the concept of a sliding timeline, attributed to temporal cold war shenanigans. I hate that justification, but the sliding timeline approach is probably the best one for how the franchise has developed. The Eugenics Wars are will happen 20 to 30 years from now... whenever now is.

If they start giving out drugs to troops, I'm signing back up!

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They were already doing this in WWII

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah, but we're not still fighting WW2, lol

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

I always think we are cursed to be emotional creatures, who need to vent our deepest darkest urges so that we could emerge better than before. A lot of scholars think even if a major catastrophe happens in our lifetime, a new and better system usually emerges, just as it happened in history. The problem is, and I always say this, it will become worse before it gets better.

[–] HalfSalesman@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (4 children)

As long as everyone is 100% instantly vaporized I'm cool with it. It'd suck if anyone had to suffer the aftermath.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Honestly, being in the Star Trek timeline would be worth it to die horribly. I don't even care at this point.

I'm just going to drop "Bernie und Ert" for the fellow German speakers here ... it's on youtube. View at your own discretion.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even as a swamp German I love them.

Aber Bernie, was hast du mit das ejaculat gemacht ?

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

That was the original timeline. But after so many time travel, who knows?

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 6 points 1 week ago

Would not surprise me even a little bit.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I honestly doubt, that it would take that long. Nukes can end a war pretty quickly.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Nukes can fast-forward the world into a late-war environment in a couple of hours. But it's not actually known if they can end a war.

Unless you are talking about those "Earth's crust destroying" nukes. But no country has actually built those.
