Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Don't blame them one single bit. I'm actively investigating whether or not I'm eligible for Canadian citizenship through my great-grandmother, just so I have an emergency exit plan if things turn extra shooty after the mid-terms.

Most Americans have no clue how hard life is here without generational wealth

The current state of things, you'd be lucky to land a job at a grocery store

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Subjectively I am seeing far fewer Ontario plates around southeast Michigan. A couple years ago you would see a bunch especially around sporting events and on summer weekends.

A now there’s also this bullshit red tape trying to get the new Gordie Howe bridge open. Embarrassed how we’ve treated our neighbors the last year and a half.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 6 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Embarrassed how we’ve treated our neighbors the last year and a half.

I hope you and your fellow citizens can channel those feelings into the action needed to fix your country.

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 3 points 8 hours ago

Next year: I'm genuinely embarrassed that our military bombed Toronto yesterday. So embarrassed. Oh gosh.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 10 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

no point. there are much better places in the world and hell even in Canada itself to vacation. I'm not going to travel to a Nazi country and risk being detained at the border cause I want to save $50 on something.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 hours ago

cause I want to save $50 on something.

do people actually believe that? Border shoppers are shit at math.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 7 points 13 hours ago

And nothing of value was lost. No one should be going there. Even after Trump fucks off. US will still be fash.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 20 hours ago

Good for them, fuck this place.

[–] updn@lemmy.ca 29 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

As a Canadian, you guys can fuck right off, eh? Get your democratic shit together.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (2 children)

I like coming north and spending my money to boost the Canadian economy because our laws down here are stupidly hurting my brothers and sisters in Canada. I hope that's still okay that I come north.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

Honestly, any American that's actively anti-regime is a brother to us. If your resistance praxis is moving dollars north, so be it.

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I won't stop ya, but I'll rib ya.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

The ribbing is warranted. I'll take it if it means I can still get my All Dress chips, peameal bacon, and poutine.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 13 points 20 hours ago

By all rights, it should go to zero.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 11 points 20 hours ago

I won't even go to visit family.

[–] Teknikal@anarchist.nexus 45 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the World Cup is going to show its not just Canada.

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 8 points 13 hours ago

Unfortunately, I think we'll find that world cup fans are even less discerning than Republican voters.

[–] collapse_already@lemmy.ml 13 points 21 hours ago

I am proud of my Canadian neighbors. I want unequivocal economic destruction traceable to the fat orange pedo.

[–] meowmeow@quokk.au 91 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Every Canadian I know now refuses to go across the border even to shop.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 54 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not worth the (potential) bullshit. Besides, we have plenty of awesome stuff up here anyway, and health care for when you find that maybe trying to pet the wildlife was a bad idea.

[–] meowmeow@quokk.au 15 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I feel there is a story behind that…

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 5 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Dozens of people get gored by Bison yearly on Catalina Island let alone Death Valley and the Mojave maiming people, well I can't imagine the Canadians are having a better time with stupid people not respecting that nature has teeth and will use them.

[–] meowmeow@quokk.au 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I’ve been to both places and have never seen Bison….

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Well they're only on Catalina Island, Death Valley just hates Germans and likes making them through non bison means.

[–] meowmeow@quokk.au 3 points 18 hours ago

Yeah well, they should try to pet a deathclaw. Everyone needs two assholes.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

You have no idea how soft and docile meese are

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 16 hours ago

A Møøse once bit my sister ...

[–] meowmeow@quokk.au 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I tried to pet a mountain lion once. Do you want to see the scar?

I know some older Canadians who still spend every winter in Florida and plan to retire there. They are, of course, white and reasonably wealthy. Myself, I'd rather not live under fascism no matter how sunny the beach is.

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 3 points 13 hours ago

a couple of my parents friends are snowbirds, they all sold their properties in Florida.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It should be especially to shop. Shopping means supporting their economy just like holidays do.
Visiting family or if a business depend on it I can understand. But going to USA without needing to doesn't make any sense, whether you are from Canada or Europe or most other places in the world.

I go for a conference almost every year for work. Skipped last year, this year its in Canada (1 out of every 5 years) so I got a two for one.

[–] AskMeForADickPic@lemmy.world 56 points 1 day ago (4 children)

The Florida cities of Panama City, Orlando, Cape Coral, Miami, Naples and North Port are all in the top 10

Imagine risking your life to visit the shithole states and you pick the most shitty of all the shitholes

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I know a few Quebecois .... who primarily speak French and have passable English ... who still cheer for Trump and MAGA and do want to go to Florida to be with Americans because of the "freedom".

I don't get this mentality because at one point it starts to look and sound more like a mental illness than a political ideology

The real Trump Derangement Syndrome.

[–] zurchpet@lemmy.ml 4 points 13 hours ago

Trump Devotion Syndrome

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 18 hours ago

they are in canada freeze drying thier brains, and go to florida to fry thier brains in the heat.

[–] INeedANewUserName@piefed.social 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I suspect a good portion of those Canadians who regularly visited Florida are in a very high tax bracket that would be lower here in the USA and lowered even further by Trump's actions.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 18 hours ago

snowbirds, alot of them tend to well off or rich.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

This speaks more to the quality of Canadian tourists than American cities.

Until it reaches 0 it is not enough IMO.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 18 hours ago

and MSM never mentioned a peep after the initial months.
