Seal. I started saving videos that might go dark.

A large majority of my apps are from F-Droid these days, but here are some of my favorites I haven't seen in this thread yet:

(Note that some of these need the IzzyOnDroid repo installed, not sure if that counts as cheating)

Tempus A rapidly improving music streaming client for Subsonic/Navidrome/Jellyfin

Kvaesitso The best launcher on Android period (Nova users, give this one a try as Nova is no longer receiving updates!)

Lavender Photos My favorite gallery app! Clean, modern interface and some very good basic editing tools that provide utility without making it feel bloated

Breezy Weather A very nice looking weather app that allows multiple weather sources (defaults to Open Meteo)

WG Tunnel A very clean and simple Wireguard client so you don't have to install your VPN provider's proprietary app

Phocid music player. OpenScale, roundsync, pulsar are all great apps. There is no equivalent on the play store. These are quality, and do exactly what they need to with no bs.

Aegis since I was extremely, extremely annoyed that Google authenticator added entries by order of appearance, had no search, couldn't reorder them, and just blasted your numbers publicly with the app open.

Aegis has all of that... These are just basic features...

I use Ente Auth for 2FA.

I've been using AntennaPod for years now to listen to podcasts. It works great and feels like a premium app.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 0 points 15 hours ago

thank you. I've been listening to less since google podcasts got shut down and haven't bothered finding something that works

Oh good! I've been looking for a replacement podcast app!

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

My go-to, it really works well, supports true podcasting.

I also use it. It's good

Aves Libre is a nice photo app

CoMaps with Sherpa Onnx is an amazing combo for a map app that tells you directions verbally

Grayjay is great and also the only open source app to my knowledge to watch and download Rumble

[–] tired_n_bored@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

To me Aves does some weird things, like when I scroll left or right the image is low quality and after a second it gets better. It's unpleasant.

Fyi, GrayJay isn't open source, it's "source available".

Open source means it has an open source license allowing you to fork the repository and make your own version. GrayJay doesn't have a license that allows that.

Feudal Tactics rarely shows up in the "best of FOSS" lists or games lists. Yet I think it's one of the most engaging and nicely balanced single player, local games out there.

[–] morgenman@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh man game wise it looks cool but visually, it's so ugly I don't know if I can do it.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yea, it's not winning any beauty contests. But super fun turn based strategy.

[–] DeathByDenim@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Oh yes, that one is great. I play it pretty much every day!

I like Mupdf Mini but found Chaka and like it even better

[–] chmod755@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

I also use Voyager

[–] oranki@nord.pub 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Breezy Weather is so damn good

OSS document scanner is so much better than using the regular camera app for scanning docs and receipts. Really useful.

[–] ace_garp@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pipepipe (can filter out shorts)

OsmAnd (keep your points of interest locally, 3D hills, satellite maps, update your area if not on map)

Alarm Klock (I have tried many others too)

QuickWeather (forecast, radar, Open-Meteo)

NeutriNote (notes)

Arcane Chat (deltachat client)

Idle Fantasy (occasional game)

GCompris (kids educational games)

SicMu Neo (tight music player)

Equate (unit conversion app)

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 2 points 1 day ago

+1 for Idle Fantasy. It's surprisingly fun for being text only.

[–] SillyDude@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

Canta, can get rid so much slop right off the device without a laptop and adb. Then you can get rid of slop they slip in with updates.

[–] BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I've been using Episteme Reader on my tablet for ebooks. It's been working very well so far.

I use SkyTube also open-source with SponsorBlock, etc. - now I wonder if LibreTube is better?

[–] garbage_world@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Droid-ify. Much nicer interface than stock F-Droid app, but all the functionality.
