Pretty sure an old flatscreen TV I used to use as a monitor was around 1280:720 and wasn't all that much bigger around the surrounding bits. So probably around that size. Just for my room, though.

For a kitchen, I would take an actually small flat screen ( around a foot, foot and a half length wise ) since that's roughly what we had growing up after we got rid of the old small CRT we had up.

Living room, I'm so used to what I think is a flat screen around five and a half, six feet long that it would feel weird not having something that long. So, probably something around that size. Mainly because it's a great size for when you have guests over and are trying to play games.

Just in the living room. Used to have a 72 inch monster but now am very happy with a 40 inch tv

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 4 points 10 hours ago

My living room has a 15 year old 48" LED TV and that's the only one I own.

It's not just about the size of the TV but size in relation to viewing distance. Too many people buy way too big TVs thinking bigger is always better and then it feels like sitting in the first row in the movies and you need to turn your head to read the subtitles.

big TV in living room, no TV elsewhere

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 5 points 12 hours ago (2 children)
  • Living room: FUCKING HUGE! 75+ inches.

  • Bedroom: 40ish inches

  • Kitchen: now I just stream off my tablet. Back when that wasn’t an option I would use a 12 inch or so. Mostly for morning news on traffic/weather.

  • Outside: Again FUCKING HUGE 75+ inches

  • Man Cave for gaming: FUCKING HUGE

  • Bar area: FUCKING HUGE

My huge TV is in my bedroom because there wasn't a wall big enough for it in the living room when we moved. Before we got it hung, we were using a projector that was actually bigger. My husband jokes about the neighbors watching TV with us through our bedroom window.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

That is awesome!

This is pretty much it. Communal areas have a TV where I’ve gotten the biggest TV with the best(-ish) quality I can get. If I gamed, same would be true for that display. Those get the heaviest use by the most people. Everywhere else I’ll probably get something passable that’s big enough for me to read subtitles on. But for most of those spaces I’ll use a tablet or Vision Pro.

Haven't had a TV in like 2 decades. Do have a projector though. Screen size used to be like 4m diagonal, now due to space constraints down to a little under 3m. Always in the bedroom: comfortable and the only room with enough space, honestly.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

What's it like using a projector? Can you just like, watch YouTube or anything on it? Is it good?

[–] Creat@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 5 hours ago

I personally love it, and would hate to go back to a tiny screen like a 40inch TV or whatever people have these days. Especially if you're more than 2m away on your bed/couch. There are drawbacks, depending on how you use your TV they might be massive or completely irrelevant. For example having it on in the background is less practical. It doesn't inclue (useful) speakers, but I have a pretty decent stereo system setup there anyway. A great positive is that you usually want a screen (not just a blank wall), which just goes away when the projector is off (rolls up, usually motorized) and you don't have a large black frame just standing around somewhere. In my case it comes down in front of the bedroom wardrobe. The projector itself is basically a box mounted to the ceiling on the other side of the room from that, so also out of the way.

The projector is connected to a PC as a primary source in my case (many use AndroidTV sticks or FireTV boxes), which plays whatever I wanna watch (streaming, local videos, youtube/twitch, ...), but I would never watch actual TV as in broadcast television. If you do, you still need some form or receiver that turns the TV signal (internet, cable, satellite, ...) into HDMI. Many more modern projectors also have some of that network stuff just built in similar to a smart TV, but generally don't have true receiver for cable/satellite.

Finally, there's light management. Typically you don't want real sunlight coming in through a window while actively watching something (movie), but it's fine for background or casual/party watching (sports or maybe youtube). How much ambient light you can tolerate while watching depends highly on your preferences and how you watch "stuff". For a real movie night we do usually lower the blinds for just a more immersive experience. But it's incredibly subjective how much darkness is needed. Projectors these days all have sufficient light output to produce a picture even with significant ambient light, but the contrast and just quality of course improves significantly with a darker environment.

I have one tv in my tv/gaming room and its 80" no tv in any other room.

[–] Melobol@lemmy.ml 20 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I don't believe in tvs in bedrooms.
We have a nice human sized one in the living room - but the theater has an 8k laser projector and the whole wall painted to be the silver screen. It is amazing.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 7 points 21 hours ago

I almost don’t care about any of this other than the tv should fit the space and tvs don’t belong in the bedroom.

[–] ultranaut@lemmy.world 15 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

There's an optimal size based off viewing distance. I aim for the biggest that's reasonable for the space.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Bedroom: 0. Watching tv before bed throws off circadian rhythm.

Kitchen: 0. Kitchen is for cooking, not tv.

Living room: 0. Why would you want a distraction when you have guests over?

[–] trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Why would you want a distraction when you have guests over?

Is that really the only time you use your living room?

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

Ah, you must be one of those board game types. See, I'm more of a 4 player Mario Kart or Mario Party type myself. Then there's Smash Bros for up to 8 people at once.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Largest in the primary movie space. We have an 85" there, big couch, dark area, it's where you go to watch something without distractions.

Living room, near kitchen is a 32 inch cheap one from best buy. We have on background TV, or if we are just hanging out will throw something on there. It also encourages that if you're doing something more serious you move to the big TV room. Pop some popcorn, make it a thing vs just relaxing.

No TV in the bedroom. We have 2 already, don't need one in there personally. We read, have small hobbies in the bedroom.

[–] Soulphite@reddthat.com 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Well fuck, now I feel like a piece of shit for having a TV not only in my bedroom, but bathroom, closet, garage and backyard... there's also tv's on the backs of each headrest in my car, tv apps on my phone and TV in the shower. The names Mike Teavee.

[–] Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The people who are saying tvs dont belong in the bedroom all have, "theaters"?

Nahh bro, these arent my people.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 0 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

There's no problem with TV in bedroom. I used to fall asleep to SpongeBob and Nickelodeon reruns, it kept me sane through school and was the only way I could sleep. I don't do it nowadays, my life is much calmer and quieter now…

But I bet the same people saying they don't believe in TV in bedroom, are scrolling their phone 3 inches from their nose, or watching YouTube on their iPad every night 😂

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

We... Actually only read? I don't know why my comment sparked so much annoyance in people, you do you. Don't know why you have to assume you know how others live.

I love my media, and I love to enjoy it, I just don't like doing that before sleep

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 0 points 10 minutes ago

I wasn't referring to your comment in that part, and I'm definitely not annoyed. Some people get a bit judgemental about personal habits and I was just poking fun at those people

[–] toiletobserver@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

About this size

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

There's one in the living room. He's the only one. So I guess that size!

[–] Monster96@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

The bigger, the better. I have a 75 inch in my bedroom and a projector that encompasses a wall in the theatre room. Granted, my bedroom is kind of big so I like it. Living room has a 70 inch so I'm happy with things. Office has a wall mounted 50 inch that I use for classic games, ambience, and chilling.

[–] trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

Just one in the living room, currently 32 inch. Bigger would be ok as long as it's affordable.

PC monitors are a different story, I have two 23 inch screens besides my laptop screen.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

About 60" for the living room, but I try to prioritize image quality over size since I can adjust the distance. Since I have young kids, I have to keep the screen higher and farther than I like, though.

Otherwise, that's it. I use computer monitors if I'm in any other room, and those are ultrawide 30" I think. (And although it's not the question, ISP panels are my favorite even with OLEDs taking over the world. I just like their color profile.)

And kitchen? C'mon. Get a tablet like a normal digital junky.

[–] Today@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

We have a 65 in the living room and a 65 on wheels that moves between the patio and my husbands office. Theres a 43 in the room that doubles as guest room and workout space. We have an 85 in the bedroom.

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

Currently have a 70 inch in the living room only. tv anywhere else makes it super distracting for me

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 2 points 19 hours ago

bedroom: 32-40"

Lounge room: 65-75". I have a small apartment, so anything bigger than about that size is far too big and I wouldn't be able to see anything.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Depends on how far away I'm sitting.

The one in the living room is a little too big honestly but it's mostly there for entertaining.
