Dicaprio is probably the more accurate, but even then he has his share of meh movies. Cage is also pretty accurate, he is really good when the role fits his style, otherwise he is so cringe. His acting in Pig is incredible.

Depp is IMO super overrated. He was really good in Fear and Loathing, Donnie Brasco or Edward Scissorhands, but since Pirates of the Caribbean he mostly played some variations of Jack Sparrow.

Sandler is actually a fucking good actor, but he always chooses the lazy way out. His acting in Punch Drunk Love or Uncut Gems is phenomenal and it pisses me off that he wastes his talent in some shitty comedies.

Reeves is not a "bad actor", but he sure is emotionless so I feel like most of the time he does not fit. However, his style is why he fits so well in a role like John Wick.

[–] cannibalkitteh@piefed.blahaj.zone 60 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think Sandler's dilemma is that he can do the safe, easy thing and bring all his longtime friends, or he can do something that's outside his usual by himself.

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 35 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

He doesn't need to prove himself any more. If he wants to produce dumb comedies where he and his buddies fuck around on camera while on extended holiday somewhere nice, seems pretty baller.

[–] binarytobis@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Someone should tell him he can just go on vacation without releasing a movie.

[–] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

And who's going to finance that vacation? They vacation AND they get paid for it.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 8 points 3 weeks ago

Grifting the movie studios. A grift that I can get behind.

[–] wopalopa@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

iirc sandlers after filming 50 first dates he treat his movies like extended vacation with friends. he's not bad just vibing

[–] Frostbeard@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Emotionless. Have you seen Bill and Ted?

(I haven't in decades, imagine they didn't hold up that well)

Keanu can do either dude bro, or stone cold badass. It's why he actually worked well as Johnny Silverhand, a stone cold dude bro.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 weeks ago

Adam Sandler is really interesting because it seems like he mostly takes low-effort roles that are basically just paid vacations for him and his friends, then once every 10 years or so he drops an absolute banger just to remind everyone he can, then goes back to having fun again.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

Reeves’ “style” is his bad acting.

[–] starik@lemmy.today 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Sorry, Keanu is such a bad actor. He seems like a great guy, and he’s been in some fun movies playing the one character he sort of knows how to play. He’s almost as bad as when they have sports stars do cameos.

Agree with the rest.

[–] Zannsolo@lemmy.world 44 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

Adam Sandler is a great actor in more serious roles, but his comedy is pretty cringe. I love Happy Gilmore.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 16 points 3 weeks ago

I would agree with this statement.

Adam Sandler can act really act in dramatic roles (Punch-Drunk-Love, Reign over Me, Uncut Gems, etc)

When Sandler produces a comedy, yeah; it tends to be bad. When Sandler is just the actor, it's a different story.

Props to Sandler to realizing that movie studios will pay him money to go on location to shoot movies and hire his friends.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 weeks ago

Punch Drunk Love is great, and it came from watching his other movies and pulling on an underlying unexplored thread.

[–] volvoxvsmarla@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 weeks ago

I think he's also quite good in uncut gems, but my opinion isn't final. I only made it through 35 minutes of the movie so far and am still recovering from the stress eight months later.

[–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

The ending of Click really threw me for a loop.

[–] pogmog@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yes! He was fantastic in The Meyerowitz Stories (2017).

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 37 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Except he's not a bad actor. He's the only good part of the bad movies he's in. I'd argue he's one of the best actors.

[–] iamericandre@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

If you’re talking cage yes he’s a good actor. Keanu is straight up a terrible actor

[–] untorquer@quokk.au 41 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I don't get it.

He's been the perfect choice for every major role he's done and been iconic for it. Everything from matrix to bill and teds to cyberpunk would have been worse with any other actor.

Just because he's admittedly less flexible doesn't mean he's bad at it.

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Idk man. I'm a big Keanu fan and I knew as a kid watching The Matrix for the first time that he was not convincing as an actor. Entertaining, absolutely. Skilled, especially in action choreography, no doubt. But I feel like his roles in movies like the John Wick series (where you aren't expected to take it super seriously) are the only ones where he doesn't stick out next to even lesser known actors as heavy handed with his acting.

[–] untorquer@quokk.au 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I think in The Matrix the fact that he stands out as a little different and inconsistent adds significantly to the allegory of the movie. I really don't think the main character in a 90's movie about the trans experience calls for someone who blends in.

That said he doesn't stand out all that much. For example, Sandler would be, while i think hilarious(at the time), a completely narrative breaking choice. On the other side, DiCaprio would have "acted" well but broken it as badly by following the assignment too well(as not to do so at all).

[–] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Counterpoint: He was definitely not the perfect choice for Jonathan Harker in Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula.

I love the guy and I agree he's good at the roles he sticks to these days, but he kinda ruined that film. (In much the same way that Sofia Coppola ruined The Godfather 3, actually. Why does Francis Ford Coppola keep getting away with this?)

yes, I was talking about Cage. I like Keanu, don't get me wrong, he's great at performing action choreography, but no, he is not a good actor.

Cage, on the other hand, I don't think I have ever seen that man not give a role his all.

[–] Botzo@lemmy.world 29 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What else would a good actor do?

Sidenote: I think Face Off is a perfect embodiment of this sentiment. An objectively terrible movie with a monumentally dumb premise, and his acting is what takes it from unwatchable to downright fun.

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

yes! literally, exactly!!

may i suggest...Ghost Rider 2?

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Cage gives 100% whether the role needs it or not and that’s why I love him.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

I saw some interview with him talking about his acting. He basically likes very expressive roles, where he can do some "over the top" acting. He was talking about how he was inspired by German expressionism for some of his roles. He did tons of great movies in his career. Adaptation or Bringing out the Dead being some of them.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

There are no bad actors in Hollywood. There are for sure better and worse actors but you don't get hired in multi-million dollar movies repeatedly for being "bad" at acting. Some of them will do a bad job from time to time (not enough time to prepare or just not in the right place at the moment) but it will be hard to find a famous actor without at least a couple of great roles.

[–] tquid@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

OK, I'll bite. What's Gal Godot good in?

[–] drath@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago
[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I feel most people were generally happy with her performance in Wonder Woman (2017).

[–] DragonAce@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The fuck? That movie was fucking awful, without her bad acting it may have actually been a halfway decent movie. But that woman is absolutely fucking terrible at acting.

Depp is not a good actor. I was willing to overlook a lot, until I saw that fucker trying to dig a hole in a perfume ad. Worst.Acting.Ever.

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

But what about Chacolat…

[–] needanke@feddit.org 7 points 3 weeks ago
[–] frankenswine@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Depp does not do good films?

[–] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago

Opinions are entirely subjective. Only you can answer that for yourself.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I think he’s like most long-time actors. He’s had some great roles that wouldn’t have been anywhere near as good had someone else done it, and he’s had “meh” and flops.

You can’t act for 40-ish years and not have a mixed bag.

[–] CalypsoGirl@lemmy.today 3 points 2 weeks ago

Hey, show some appreciation for Adam Sandler. His earliest works were beloved by all at the time. Big Daddy & Happy Gilmore & The Wedding Singer were adorable.

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago
[–] spacegoat@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I wasn’t wearing my glasses and I thought it was all Cage

[–] cley_faye@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

What is the criteria for being a bad actor, exactly? Being loved by viewers? Being repeatedly cast into roles? Being iconic? Being successful? Having worldwide renown?

I'm a bit lost here.
