Never seen anybody using emoji in any community. I did use once or twice, but the way its absent over here, I'm starting to think its part of some implicit rules lemmy has

Emojis are a trashy signal for me I hate them. I want my text monochrome. Cool unicode symbols get a pass. "⚠" Yes "⚠️" no.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Never?

My whole username is emoji. And I'm everywhere. 🫩

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

And i love your username! Honestly not many names stand out so can reliably say "oh its them".i

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

I've always been of the opinion that one can use their words. I've never read anything with emojis crammed in where I felt they've added anything of substance. It just seems lazy and a bit trashy.

Yes. I'm well aware I'm a curmudgeon. I make no apologies.

[–] exist@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 days ago

I use them on discord on sometimes on othef chat platforms. I don't really like them in longer form text like lemmy or reddit.

They also, at least for me, carry context that doesn't make that much sense outside one community. For example I used laughing cat emoji that we use to signify being amused and a guy from a different community thought I was mocking him.

It's not that I dislike emoji, but that using them is more effort than a casual comment deserves.

I like ASCII emojis more. Emojis feel creepy sometimes I like the purple heart

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Emojis remind me of LLM slop

[–] SpatchyIsOnline@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

God I hate the emojis used as bullet points trend so much, it looks so tacky and is the biggest immediate sign of a vibecoded slop project

I really don't understand where it even came from. It's not like people were consistently using them as bullet points in the training data....at least not to the extent that LLMs are making it a trope.

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Honestly AI output mimiking linkdiots posts is terrible

[–] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Emojis are for people who don't know how to read/write the local language. No exceptions. That includes 'native speakers' of the language who use them. Emoji are a sign of illiteracy and people who use them were failed by their education.

[–] kylewalter101@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 day ago

Okay thats far😑

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 37 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I see Lemmy as an older crowd that prefers ASCII emotes. Although the do work in some situations.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Those are called emoticons by the way.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Knew there was a word for it but absolutely blanked on the word.

I think my first thought is that MAGA’s rage bot farms will use a lot of laughing emojis to taunt people.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 31 points 4 days ago

it's just personal preference 🤷‍♀️

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I use them about as often and i the same context as intentional facial expressions. 😅

[–] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've been conditioned over time to not use them on internet forums but I use them a lot when texting. So it feels kind of weird to see one around on a Lemmy comment but I don't hate them

[–] courval@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

For me it's part of non-verbal communication and empathy when used to add context to what you're trying to communicate. But I don't use it online either.. I think it's because some forums don't enable them or it's not practical if you're on a desktop per example. Maybe that's why the Internet is so miserable 😅

[–] mapleseedfall@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

In neck of the woods the emoji 🙏🙏🙏

is practically a professional requirements.

has to be 3 🙏

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Personally I am happy to be free of this arbitrary rule of Reddit sheep culture that you can't use emojis. People here have the courtesy to use them as appropriate, and I myself use them occasionally. I hope we all just keep it that way.

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 20 points 4 days ago

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] courval@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

It's just that everyone is miserable here and it would be a river of sad and crying faces in every conversation..

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Check my post history, I guess. 😅

They're helpful in providing the proper context to a text-based convo. IRL, you'd just see my face and body language and hear my tone and understand things better so we have to adjust when texting. This is why people feel like they need the "/s" for sarcasm and whatnot. 👍

My "I'm being kidnapped, send help" secret code is "I start using emoji"

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I think a few old school text emoji's are fine, when used in moderation.

:D

I think relying on cute lil pictures littered throughout text to convey your message is lazy, distracting and childish.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago

No but they're fine, and also yes sometimes 🙂

i don't use them here usually.

[–] ace_garp@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I probably use the 🙃 emoji most.

Because it does not really have an equivalent in ASCII emoticons.

I like that it's not much in use here.

I have to think more carefully about what words I type and how to convey my emotions in text. It's good to practice written communication, and it's good to be comfortable with it for when you want to be taken more seriously.

And I kinda assume those who splatter their text with emojis are bots or LLMs programmed to sound more human, or people trying to imply or invoke emotions to sell me on some nonsense or other, so I don't read those comments or posts anyway.

It's fun that Lemmy has its own culture which comes as a little shock but is easy to adapt to once you figure it out, isn't it?
