I promise, I'm not a spy from Citizen. I'm just a curious guy who is new to the hobby. I often watch YouTube videos about watches and it's very common to see "10 AFFORDABLE WATCHES YOU MUST BUY!" or a Teddy Bulbasaur video that says "This watch is super affordable & has an entry level price point" then the watch is $595. Hell, right now I'm watching a video about Citizen & the list is saying affordable is under $1000. My limit currently is $250 for a watch. MAYBE, if I save for a bit I'll raise it to 300. (Disclaimer: I'm in Japan so $250 goes much further. I have a Seiko 5 cement for $120ish.)

I know we all come from different backgrounds and have different financial situations. "Affordable" for you may not be affordable for me. That is perfectly fine. I'm just very curious as when collections are shown in this sub, I like to Google the watch. Often times it's a multi thousand dollar watch.

Thank you all & I'm looking forward to hearing your stories.

The last watch I bought was under $4k. The next one that I want to buy is under $8k.

[–] JBLL100s@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Around $8,000.

[–] CrzyJoeDavola@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It has significantly increased over the years but I honestly think will not keep growing.

8 years ago I bought watches for $300-$700

4 years ago I bought a watch for $2500.

2 years ago I bought watches between $5000 and $7000.

This year I’ve purchased a few watches between $10k and $15k.

My income will let me comfortably stay at this level and fortunately my interest does not extend to high horology pieces. At some point in next 5-10 years I would like to purchase a PM dress watch which I mentally budget between 25 and 35k.

[–] WYLFriesWthat@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

About $10k for something basic.

[–] cofonseca@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My most expensive watch is an Orient Bambino. I'm not addicted enough to spend thousands on a Grand Seiko or Rolex (yet) and I don't wear any of my watches enough to justify that cost.

For me, an average watch purchase would be around $150-$200 with my max budget being around $400 for something nicer and a little more unique.

[–] blink85@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't really care about prices. I just buy whatever I like when the itch hits, as long as I have the means for it at that time.

My first watch was actually my most expensive, it cost me about $5000. Then I got a PRX Powermatic 35mm and a couple of G Shocks. And now I'm looking at some $300 Seiko's and microbrands alongside an $8000 chronograph 😂

[–] batuckan1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’ve spent a $1500 on a luxury brand watch a few times

It got to the point where it became an obsession constantly trying obtain more expensive watches more frequently

In the end i came to the conclusion that what’s the point of buying and Wearing luxury watches if you can’t wear them publicly for fear of being robbed or assaulted?

My luxury watches collection is very small now.

[–] Yeti-Stalker@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Usually between 2-5k, but this can be an expensive hobby no matter what your budget is. One watch leads to two watches and so on, before you know it you’ve spent 250 four times and could have just saved for a 1k watch…it’s stuff like that is where I made mistakes when I first started my collecting journey.

[–] tambrico@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I personally like collecting inexpensive watches. The most I've ever paid for a watch was I think $350. I like having a variety of styles and a bunch of different fun diver watches. That's not for everyone. I probably would buy a more expensive luxury watch like a Rolex GMT Master Ii Pepsi, but only if I could get it at retail.

[–] sfeicht@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As much as I need to as long as I don't lose much on resale. Nothing better then wearing a nice watch for a year and then selling it for more than what you paid. Free hobby.

[–] mattex93@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I will only buy serious watches from now on, so 3k and above.

If you have 250 for a watch i strongly suggest you get a really cheap watch (like an F91 Casio) and save for something better, around 7-800.

That’s the range where watches start getting good (materials, movements, heritage…), while 300-400 is where you get the worst value for money imo, you basically get glorified 100$ watches.

[–] achim-memo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My most expensive watch is a Tissot PRX (quartz), and I can’t imagine myself buying something more expensive than that.

[–] MEDAKk-ttv-btw@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I haven't bought in a while, but I think my next watch will probably be a used NTTD so around there

[–] bestboah@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

have you ever thought about picking up a chinese brand? they’re pretty good value for the money. they blow seiko out of the water under $300, in my opinion

[–] uz_ee@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Ive exited the hobby. Have appx 28k Cad invested in the five watches I do own. Most expensive is my Sub, least expensive is my SKX

[–] pgthsg@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Watch prices are ridiculous. There’s people who think anything under $10K is affordable.

The majority of my watches are under $300 with the exception of my Lorier and Traska which were about $500 and $600 respectively. I don’t feel a need to spend any more at the moment, i’d rather use that money towards my education or traveling. I won’t go broke or into debt for a watch.

[–] yeldarb_lok@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'm with you, sub $300 is affordable

[–] MyNameIsVigil@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I never spend more than a trivial amount of money.

[–] MyWatchJourney@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Idk how anyone can call a Seiko 5 for 250 bucks a good deal. Can buy Credor watches for that kinda money 😂

[–] TheSantanist@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I've lowered my threshold I used to think $2K was unachievable when I wasn't working

When I had my first job (20yrs ago) I was spending average $2K a month on luxury items (ie a watch or a guitar) sometimes more. Shit got out of hand.

Then around 10 years ago I started getting $500 watches thinking that was a sweet average spot.

In the last few years, I've sold most of and kept ones that had actual good memories attached.

My most recent watch was a Citizen Automatic that didn't cost much, half was paid for by a bunch of ex-work colleagues that I worked with for between 5-14years. loved them a bunch and I think about them all the time when I look at it,at my new job...

And I'm about to drop $2K+ on a watch...

Most I've spent - $250 on my seiko skx007

Most expensive i own - speedmaster professional - $6500 value

Most i would spend - $10,000-$13,000 for a new Rolex submariner no date... One day (soon hopefully)

I don't like having a ton of watches.. of the ones i already own, they don't see enough wear time as is, so i want a smaller collection of pieces i REALLY love.

There are a few that will never leave my collection due to sentimental value, such as my vintage porsche design chronograph, or my speedmaster professional, my seamaster chronograph, and my seiko skx.

I think I'll end up buying a watch from JLC, IWC, and the sub from rolex still and be done.

[–] winterisfav@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m saving to buy a GADA watch, a Damasko DK30. So probably around $1500 fir a super nice

[–] ConstructionFar8570@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Totally depends on the watch. I buy higher end so I would say it starts for me on a sport model $10k and up. A grail piece $100k and up.

I would say if you spend 2% to 5% of your income on watches (like a hobby), it isn't unhealthy. So it all depends on the disposable income.

Also sometimes some people need to have a good watch because they are surrounded by people who wear Rolexes as their daily.

[–] TravelingDriver@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Most of my watches are "affordable" watches $200-400 but I promised myself I would stop accumulating unnecessary crap and save up to have maybe 3 expensive watches. Have one so far.

[–] ReasonableSnow3766@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I found a Citizen Promaster Aqualand on sale for about $500 and so far it's the most expensive one that I own. I switched up from SEIKO to Citizen after a local retailer told me one of my watches wasn't worth the money to repair since they sold Rolexes. But I don't think I'd honestly pay over $700 for a watch no matter what my income level was.

[–] Thuller@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Not more than 1k usually. I am not really able to appreciate top-of-the-line inhouse movements, so I shop by finish and design. When it comes to case or dial quality, I feel like even some 300 $ watches can compete with 5 figure ones.

[–] SocietyExpress5392@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Has to depend on the watch. If you can’t walk away. No regrets, but it.

[–] Free_Economics3535@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My budget is similar to yours, look up r/ChineseWatches. Variety of styles around that price point. Also second hand watch groups on facebook are great.

[–] j_ha17@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] jay_does_beers@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Im in the same boat as you. 250-300. I also am pretty rough on my watches for work so i feel bad beating up my more pricey pieces. I’ve got a great little tuna that is so comfy. Great intro diver imo

[–] NemethSzilard@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My limit is around $500.

I have a wishlist of watches in that range. I’d rather have a collection of 10-15 watches with a wide variety, than 2-3 more expensive ones.

[–] SeizeThemMemes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The most I've ever spent on a watch is $500, granted I've maxed my budget three times total. I feel WAYYYYY more comfortable at the $100 price point.

[–] hotcoolhot@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think 3-5k is a sweet spot. Where you get a good finish and a good movement, anything beyond is diminishing returns

[–] PThug@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Because I like variety and could never just have 1 watch I stick with pieces that cost less than $500 with most of my collection in the $100 to $200 range. You can get some awesome deals on citizens and seikos that normally run 500 or 600.

[–] Rosschops@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] ChasingTheRush@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Avg right now is probably 2k, but mostly I imagine I’ll end up around 10k when it’s all said and done assuming I don’t get stupid rich in the next ten years.

[–] Boris_HR@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

200 EUR. Im the homage type of the customer.

[–] orbofinsight@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Watches I am interested in tend to cost around $5,000-$10,000 (or a lot more, but I don't buy those). I don't want watches where the cost to service them makes me feel like I should throw them out.

[–] Von_Lehmann@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think for me, like around 1500 is what I'm comfortable to get and use without caring too much

I have absolutely no fucking idea how people are cool wearing something that costs more than that

[–] FarFetchedOne@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't think I'd go over 700 Canadian. If I spent over 1k on a watch, I'd get a mouthful from the wife. That being said, alot of enthusiasts have pointed out that the variation in fit and finish of a <1000 watch is not going to be that much. Once you start pushing a thousand, you start to see more superior craftsmanship; greater attention to details. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

[–] CXyber@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

400$ max, might go slightly above if the movement persists as worth ir

[–] greaterhoustonian@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Its like wine to me. At over 75 dollars most wine will be good and you’ll be impressed. The key is finding the good bottles at 20, 15 dollars a bottle or less.

Of course a Speedy or Submariner will be good watches, but finding the value and joy in a watch sub 500 dollars is the joy for me.

[–] tommyshelby1986@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This depends on your responsibilities and disposable income.

Im a college student and a one watch guy, at the moment my daily is in the sub 500 range, and Im thinking about getting a dressier piece, preferably in the same range. In the future I will get a luxury piece when I get more established in life.

I'm as poor as a church mice. But i regularly find 1000$+ watches on my job with no opportunities to return them to owner. Got a Cartier Tank recently. And 500$ Orient (i have several and this is a bad brand. Really bad brand quality-wise). I would pay no more than 500$ for a mass-made watch.

But i would pay more only for a really unique watches like this:

[–] thebigdoover@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I just ordered my first “nice watch” for about $240, all others before that have been around $100 or less (all quartz). I like watches, but I’m not a big spender of things that aren’t true necessities

[–] TheReidOption@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Average is tough. I treated myself to a Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic this year for $800 CAD, I have a couple of Seiko 5's ($200-400 CAD), and a ton of homage watches from AliExpress (Pagani Design, Steeldive, Octopus Kraken) that have ranged from $60-300 CAD.

To answer your question: $200 CAD or less. At that price I'm not afraid to wear it for fear of it picking up a few scratches. The truth is 99% of the population doesn't give a fuck about watches or what you're wearing, so you should focus on what you can afford and what brings YOU joy, no one else.
