Basically the title. Zenith makes some pretty stellar and innovative watches imo. I also love their history and style. However, the brand recognition outside of watch lovers is pretty dismal. And while I generally buy watches for me, I do want the watches I buy (particularly those I’m paying $5k-10k for) to have some brand recognition among the public. What happened with Zenith in this respect? Or am I giving the public too little credit?

Lack of marketing imo.

Didn't Zenith make (maybe they still do?) make TV and electronics?

[–] Jjespe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Different company but, strangely enough, the Zenith that made TVs owned Zenith watches for a brief time in the 1970s.

[–] xMechanismZero@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This is exactly the problem. I connote the name with home electronics.

For me, it’d be like purchasing a Sanyo watch.

I just can’t dissociate the Zenith name from home electronics. As a result, I could never buy a Zenith watch.

That’s when Zenith TV was at their zenith

It’s a different company but consumer electronics is where my head goes first when I hear Zenith.

[–] bisonsurfer1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is the problem. If you can’t even distinguish the company from a tv company, that’s an issue.

[–] LiqdPT@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Many companies make many products. It's not out of the realm of possibility, especially in the 80s, that an electronic company would also make quartz watches.

As it is, I never heard of Zenith watches until maybe the last year. I have decades of Zenith selling TVs and radios in my head.

[–] bisonsurfer1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No I don’t mean that it’s an issue with you, it’s an issue that Zenith should be doing better marketing!

[–] sdujour77@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (8 children)

Perhaps only me, but I appreciate the under-the-radar positioning of certain upscale brands such as Zenith. People who know, know. And as those folks are more likely to be real watch enthusiasts, it's almost like a secret handshake or password or something. Just more fun.

[–] bisonsurfer1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Not that I don’t appreciate the under the radar, but I’d like the good brands to get the recognition they deserve.

[–] GardenerInAWar@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Exactly this. It's fun to see another watch person get excited. Secret handshake is a good way to put it. Flaunt only to yet unknown friends as mutual appreciation, without bluntly flaunting to just everyone which always looks desperate for approval.

[–] maicunni@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Maybe it’s bc they named their brand after a TV from back in the day?

[–] 34boor@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m more inclined to buy more under the radar luxury things that I personally love. I’m this way with clothes as well. Plus because you’re not paying for the brand name in a lot of cases you get more craftsmanship for your money. Wearing Gucci and a Rolex downtown is a good way to get robbed lol

Because its not one of the three or four brands normal people know about. Most people don't care about brands of watches that cost way more money than they would ever consider to spend on a wrist accessory.

Because of Rolex

[–] UniDesignWatch@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Their tricolor El Primero is well loved. I couldve bought one for $4K 5 years ago but now its $10K. I think they are doing well

[–] Alex_the_Alright@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I bought one new for a little less than 4K before the hype. I knew nothing I just liked it and farer had messed up my order and refunded me so I bought the zenith. I can’t believe how much they are now.

I went to a dealer today, looking at a couple Zeniths (and some other brands) and felt that I was almost being "pushed away" from Zenith. They brought up poor(er) customer service when compared to Omega, Rolex, etc. and that if an issue did arise it could take 9-12 months to get the watch back. There was also a clear lack of brand knowledge when compared to other brands in the $5-15k range.

[–] bisonsurfer1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Which brands were they pushing your towards?

[–] DaPharSydeToo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

if an issue did arise it could take 9-12 months to get the watch back

that's just blatant misinformation, and clearly this dealer has some ulterior motive for talking trash on zenith. zenith is a part of LVMH and their customer support all run on the same system - regardless of whether you have a tag heuer, hublot, zenith, etc. you will be issued an AFS number.

i know this from experience, as i've had both my tag and zenith watches serviced for a fair price, with a typical turnaround time for a luxury watch.

[–] mikeyray15@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I figured as much. And this was just one salesperson at one dealer, and maybe they were just not as well versed on zenith so didn’t try to sell me harder on it.

Just Tourneau things.

[–] vinnycas@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just did a post on a couple of vintage Zeniths I got from Grandpa.

[–] endo55@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Can't load the pictures

[–] DeweyCheatem-n-Howe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I had never heard of them until I got into watches. Probably because their name isn't plastered on billboards and jewelry shop windows and ubiquitous in popular cinema.

[–] ananix@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What u talking about most people only know rolex omega, seiko, citizen and casio. You could say the same thing as you do, about any other brand and im sure they all deserve recognition. No clue why u want Zenith to be prestige they are nothing too me and i see no reason why they would be.

[–] happy_chickens@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I came across a non running Zenith pocket watch in a thrift store for 5 bucks. I still haven’t taken it in to get serviced, but if people knew the name it definitely wouldn’t have been 5 bucks.

[–] TurianTacos@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Used to love Zenith until I had to send one of my older chronomasters in for servicing. Came back with damaged dial and running +10 seconds per day, had to send it back in and had a very long dispute with Zenith to replace the dial for free.

So yea. Their watches are great, but the price ain't worth the aftersales service.

My grandpa had a pretty sweet Zenith tv back in the day

[–] etinarcadia@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love that Zenith is an under-the-radar brand. It means you can buy amazing vintage pieces from the 1970s for (relative) bargain prices. Long may it remain a brand for watch enthusiasts!

[–] Astropin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Among non watch people? You could say this about every brand besides Rolex. Sad, but true...and I do not own a Rolex, but I do own a Zenith.

[–] teckel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I would say they don't. Is it Rolex? No, but watch company is. But what does it matter if people who are not into watches don't know the Zenith name?

[–] lzwzli@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Why is this a problem?

[–] DunhillandFrogMorton@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Grab a vintage Daytona! Then you get Rolex marketing with a Zenith movement! WIN WIN WIN

[–] HMNbean@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What’s a kidney or two cost lately? That kidney depreciates but the Rolex keeps giving!

[–] mmcc120@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Anecdotally, the people in my life who aren’t into watches, when shown a Zenith, feel that the logo and name feel cheap to them

Name sucks… keep thinking it’s a TV

[–] alfis329@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

All that non watch people really know is Rolex and omega. You could also ask why most no watch people don’t recognize patek or vacheron Constantine even though those are some of the most sought after watches in the world. The fact is that most people that don’t care about luxury watches will only think a watch is fancy if it’s a Rolex or iced out

[–] SunglassesAtNight92@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I would actually say TAG is more well known than omega. Hublot is getting up there too but you’re right, outside of those 3 + Rolex and maybe casio, they aren’t going to know what your watch is.

Bad name. Sounds like some cheap chinese homage brand.

[–] gomper@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Who cares if other people don't recognize your brand? As long as you like it and you know the quality that's all that matters

[–] eTransporter@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Most brands other than Rolex are not recognizable by anyone other than enthusiasts. Rolex is a fashion and status brand; brands like Zenith are enthusiast brands. Different CVP.

[–] misterflappypants@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

zenith elite 37’s can be found for $2k used, for an 8mm thick automatic dress watch.

Zenith makes numerous stunning pieces.

[–] LiqdPT@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

When I think of Zenith, I think of TVs from the 80s

[–] SunglassesAtNight92@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Almost every brand is unknown to non-watch people. Everyone has heard of rolex and maybe Casio. After that I would say TAG Heuer and maybe omega are known but that’s about it. If you’re buying watching for people to recognise, you’re doing it wrong. And unless you limit yourself to those brands they’ll never care.

Jean Claude Biver came in spreading gaudy hublot esque design queues to get more sales. I think it cheapened the brand a bit. Just my opinion.

[–] Pallid-Notion@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Because it’s not a Rolex.
