A fifth of U.S. adults now regularly get news on TikTok, up from just 3% in 2020. In fact, during that span, no social media platform we’ve studied has experienced faster growth in news consumption, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis.

TikTok is primarily known for short-form video sharing and is especially popular among teens – 63% of whom report ever using the platform.

But it has also become a popular news source for young adults. In our new survey, 43% of adults under 30 say they regularly get news there, up from 9% in 2020.

"Slash" wrist.

[–] lemmylump@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fucking hell.

GenZ and younger are going to make what happened to their Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, AM talk radio hate filled grandparents and parents look tame in comparison.

I'm glad I don't have kids.

All for profit social media controlled by billionaires and government propaganda are a cancer that should be destroyed. Now.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

The solution is for parents to talk to their kids. Crazy, I know.

As someone who never had used tiktok I'm honestly not sure how. Like are there Tick Tock channels that just do news? Or is it just random people say shit and they believe it? I don't get the mechanics. I thought Tick Tock was mostly just for porn. And some dances that eventually turn into porn.

[–] ninjabard@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

I don't use it but am sent clips from friends fairly regularly. There are lots of content creators who fact check articles and help fight misinformation. But there are just as many spreading propaganda.

There are are the normal outlets like CNN, ABC, ETC and then there are independent journalists or journalists just working in their free time, then there are more trusted accounts that are aggregators or do deep dives into very specific stopics. Then there are a lot of random people saying shit... It's not the worst place to get news if you have critical thinking skills.

I thought Tick Tock was mostly just for porn. And some dances that eventually turn into porn.

I spent a great deal of time on TikTok from 2021-2025 when trimp allowed it to return, I have never seen any porn on the platform, I saw very few dances.

There are a lot of new outlets that have channels, there are a lot of independent journalists on there as well. There were also people, normal people documenting their experiences as they were happening (bombings in Palestine, protests, etc).

From when I was on TikTok if it's even decent channels it's people putting there own spin on the news. It misses a lot of smaller stuff and also doesn't let you form your own view from a few different places. Also creators disappear all the time.

And now I have Camel by Camel stuck in my head, thanks for that

is it just random people say shit and they believe it?

To be fair that’s kind of how any news source works if we get right down to the essence of it

[–] Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, it's fucking awful. My mother has gotten in to tiktok, and as a result, has been spewing crazy fucking conspiracy theories.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That doesn't sound like she's getting news, though.

I'm probably being naive, but I'd like to think that when the article says "get news on TikTok," they actually mean that and this excludes "alternative facts" bullshit. Aren't there trusted news sources that use the platform?

[–] rbesfe@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The responses are self reported. If someone thinks that their conspiracy bullshit is news, they'll say that they get news from tiktok.

Mainstream sources on the platform exist, but the algorithm doesn't prioritize them over Joe Schmoe in his pickup truck

Would be nice to have it clearly spelled out in the article, especially since it’s pew. But I am pretty sure “news” when seen in this context just means how people keep themselves “informed.” They don’t mean people following “reputable” sources like an AP TikTok account, if that exists.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Like what?

(I don't have tiktok so I don't know what their algorithm regurgitates)

Tylenol causes autism.

[–] Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Last one I heard from her was something about fluoride and mind control.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's a terrible way to get news.

[–] Akrenion@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago

I actually follow government subsidised but independent news from Germany. They are also doing a "news in 100 seconds"-podcast on Spotify. Some of the channels I follow also cover events like the general strike in Italy (and how it is not widely covered in mainstream media) but I stay vigilant and don't treat it as a single source of truth.

One of many reasons why 'Murica is cooked.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago

That’s so sad. They should use Lemmy instead.

I feel like that explains a lot.
