John Cage - 4'33
Everyone just has to sit in silence and think about why having a nationalist song is kinda weird in the light of the modern day
I see John Cage - 4'33, I upvote.
When I think about it's almost certainly my most listened to song. Some days I'll just listen to it on repeat for hours
Entry of the Gladiators for America because it has become a fucking circus over here.
Hey now...
That song rocks when its played by a proper brass band, it only sounds silly when you make it silly. Otherwise its a good march.
Fuck the USA by The Exploited
Hamsterdance - USA.
It captures the mindset of our current administration and it goes through my head whenever I think of the bumbling redneckery they churn out on a daily basis.
US should just change to the Russian national anthem until the current puppet is out of office
"My Oil"... talkin' bout MY oil
"America! fuck yeah! Coming again to save the motherfuckin day, yeah!"
Edit: wow, this is hilariously relevant given the situation in Venezuela.
This suggestion aged faster than milk....
Porno,
Fuck yeah!
Valium,
Fuck yeah!
Edit after watching the video: fuck this so perfectly encapsulates America's bullshit. Between firing a rocket launcher at a terrorist toppling the Eifel tower into the arc de Triomphe, and shooting a jeep into the Sphinx.
I never watched the movie after I matured, I really should rewatch that movie.
Also forgot there was a slowed down version, and while not sobbing, I did shed a tear. I feel Kamail Nanjiani crying during Godzilla.
There's only one right answer in Canada.
And that is, of course, The Logdriver's Waltz
Current Country - USA: Probably the theme song of Team America. My brother showed it to me in like... idk 2015-2018 or something and I thought it was funny.
Or alternatively: The Theme Song of Man in the High Castle (It's about alt-history where nazi germany won and takes over America... fitting for current events)
Previous Country - People's Republic of China: This Mandarin Fan-Made version of 海闊天空 (Vast Oceans, Boundless Skies).
The original 海闊天空 is the most popular song in the Canto-sphere, I think every Hong Konger or even most Guangzhou resident would know it. The original has the term 原諒我這一生不羈放縱 愛自由 (Forgive me for my entire life never giving up freedom) which I think it's about personal freedom like careers and personal choices, not as in political, but Hong Kong protesters have used it as their unofficial anthem.
This Mandarin version adds much more words that implies politics, but oddly enough, I don't think this song got banned in China. Namewee (the person who made the Music Video) later made another MV that has more political anti-CCP lyrics that probably cross the government's "red line" and he got banned from China for that. (Namewee is a Malaysian Citizen of Chinese Ethnicity)
Germany: David Hasselhoff - I've been looking for freedom
cynical version, both German Rap also Content Warning: too many bad things to list
Disarstar - OneTake #32 / Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum
I’m guessing you’re not German?
I am indeed german and I've been looking for some freedom lately.
Never realized Germans identified with this song, thought it was an Anglo-Saxon thing.
Germans LOVE Hasselhoff’s music for some reason.
It should be the Battle Hymn of the Republic, just with some of the original lyrics:
John Brown's body lies a moldering in the grave
John Brown's body lies a moldering in the grave
John Brown's body lies a moldering in the grave
But his truth keeps marching on
or
We'll hang Jeff Davis from a crab apple tree
We'll hang Jeff Davis from a crab apple tree
We'll hang Jeff Davis from a crab apple tree
John Brown's truth keeps marching on.
I have very, very strong opinions about the the US national anthem (the Star Spangled Banner). It's too long, too boring, the words are weird because it was a poem first. As a kid, I had a hard time remembering the lyrics to the song (to put it in perspective, I had no problem remembering the Canadian national anthem after couple listens of the version that was on the South Park Movie OST). Furthermore, the US national anthem is written by a pro-slavery dick head. Lastly, 99% of people do not have the vocal range to hit the highest notes.
You know what is a great, catchy song, that anyone can sing? Woodie Guthrie's This Land is Your Land. I am half willing to drop the lines critical of the US government, if it means that it would be chosen as the national anthem. (Edit: grammar)
United States: The battle hymn of the republic.
The line "as christ died to make men holy let us die to make men free" slaps, and in general it's just a better post civil war anthem. We could do John Brown's Body (same tune different words) if we're feeling more based
Not my country but, Book of Days by Enya should be Ireland's national anthem.
I am part Irish though I have never set foot on Irish soil. So, so far back in my lineage, someone came from Ireland. Does it matter now? Not really, but it is cool that my favourite singer is from there. U2 is Ireland's biggest musical export, but I think she represents the place better.
The song from "Far and Away"?
My friend, Whiskey in the Jar was right there. Either the Thin Lizzie or the Dubliners version. I've heard that song while in Ireland. Can't say the same for Enya, as much as I do like both her work and that song.
I think my fellow Irish will know the real national anthem
Proud to be a Canadian - Dayglo Abortions.
But I’m Albertan so ours would be something idiotic like Trump Won - Natasha Owens.
Darude - Sandstorm.
That is a hard question considering my mind went to songs that would be great for other things. You know, songs like Lies In Their Blood by nostraightanswer or Schizophrenia from Song of Saya. One for the state of the school system here and one for the insanity of the current US government, but neither would be good for national anthem material.
Right now? The End of the Innocence
O' beautiful, for spacious skies
Now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie
England - If we must have one, then Land of Hope and Glory is a good contender, but there are so many problems with the lyrics as they are that a complete rewrite of those would be necessary for me to be happy with it.
For Britain as a whole, I don't know. The current dirge needs scrapping for sure. (And maybe the subject of the song as well, but that's a different story).
Scotland and Wales already have their own (Flower of Scotland and Land of My Fathers respectively), and Northern Ireland actually use Danny Boy in some contexts.
It would be interesting to somehow blend all four into a secular hymn but that's so far above my skill level it's not even funny.
America the Beautiful, IMO
Money (That's What I Want)
God save the queen - motorhead
Nookie.
