The conspiracy theory that he’s attempting to rile people up until he has a plausible excuse to remove civil liberties is looking more and more plausible

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 56 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Or he can just....remove civil liberties anyway. Why the need to jump through hoops?

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 34 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Fascists just love and adore fake appearances. They are all about the propaganda and getting their hardcore base to rally around a common cause. That's why the Reichstag fire was so effective for Hitler, it was easy to scapegoat the communists and old government and get the base to support the idea of taking complete power.

Sure, trump could just declare martial law and seize everything. But it would be significantly easier and longer lasting if he has a Reichstag fire to rally up a January 6th 2.0.

Dude, half the world believes in some entity that created everything and we are his center of attention. Why would not they believe in false narratives of their master and they love to hate minorities

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago

It doesn't matter if the excuse is plausible. People who want to show their loyalty can do it by claiming to believe the unbelievable thing.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. -- Frank Wilhoit

By claiming to believe the lie, you also lay a claim to being part of the in-group so the rules (like telling the truth about things) don't apply to you. Of course, the truth is that 99.9% of the people who think of themselves as part of the in-group were never part of it, and will eventually be treated the same as the people who they're trying to trample on.

Rulers need the cooperation of the masses. This is all about concocting a chaotic political environment where people are afraid enough that they won't stop the power grab.

It's possible it will backfire, and we should be doing everything in our power to try to make that happen, but that's the overall strategy.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The cooperation of the masses angle is extremely important. As fucked up and idiotic as it is, many people are fully buying into the narrative that she ran him over and deserved it. It's hard to believe when you're here on Lemmy, but it's working on a shocking amount of people, as well as obviously his base. So waiting for an actual event to point to will legitimize it in a massive way.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah it's too bad we don't have clearer video. Like if you watch carefully and thoughtfully, it's pretty obvious what's happening but if you're motivated to lie to yourself, the view is just obscured enough that the deception can survive.

Like a lot of longtime BLM people were puzzled that George Floyd was the one to break the dam of public outrage because things like that happen all the time. But the difference is it was documented so clearly, so intimately, that there was simply no possible justification. We may need a moment like that to break through with ICE and unfortunately I'm not sure it will be Renee Good just because we had bad luck with the camera angle.

[–] bear@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

A dash cam is a good investment for a lot of reasons.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Wouldn't that footage be in the custody of ICE/FBI right now? Meaning it wouldnt see the light of day most likely.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

He’s currently courting the necessary political figures to be able to do so without major disruption to himself and those already onboard.

It’s easier to fight fewer people. It’s pleasant to own nice things.

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 days ago

He doesn't have to take your civil liberties if you give up and stop resisting first. That's what he wants. He wants you to cower and surrender.

[–] arin@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Civil lives are already being removed. The mom didn't just lose her liberty

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Yup. Just keep invading more and more of America until something is ignited. Then he and that demon Stephen Miller will be rock-hard as they invoke martial law.

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Here he goes. He was hoping for an opportunity to escalate so he can cancel the midterms. If we want another election it's going to take action across the country

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 15 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Elections are run by the states. State officials decide to hold them and run them. If a Republican-majority state doesn’t, then they don't get representation in Congress.

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

I get that, but he has already talked about trying to cancel them and declaring a state of emergency to justify it multiple times. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying that relying on our system to correct this mistake hasn't worked so far and I'm starting to doubt that it's going to hold up to correct it at all at this point. I wouldn't put it past him to mobilize whatever willing troops he can to directly stop local elections. I also live in a newly potentially purple state, so I guess I'm pretty dubious of everything surrounding this upcoming midterm regarding normalcy

CBP massing in Minnesota? What's the deal, lots of people jumping the border in Grand Portage? /s

Citizens are already sick and tired of ICE operations in Minneapolis, but sure, double down and pour more law enforcement into the area. What a fucking joke, not only should reinforcements be assigned from the National Guard, but even the mayor has said they're unwelcome. Go home Feds, and take your ball with you.

[–] baronvonj@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trump has been asking the DoJ about invoking the Insurrection Act over the immigrant "invasion" since, I believe, inauguration day. The escalation of ICE presence, activity, and tacticsay very well be an intentional effort to provoke a resistance that the DoJ would feel comfortable recommending invoking the Insurrection Act over.

You're talking about the demented rapist's most often used and predictable response.

Hey Walz, use your national guard and state that “ALL ICE agents in this state will be hand and leg cuffed, beaten to the ground, and left there for 10 days if they do NOT leave the state within 24 hours”.

[–] PhoenixDog@piefed.ca 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Someone needs to remind these "agents" that if they want to go home, maybe they should go home.

It has been for a while, but one side doesn't seem to realize it yet

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 1 points 1 day ago

Woe betide the anyone who fights back without over a thousand armed civilians behind him.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Which border is Minnesota adjacent to?

[–] 4z01235@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

It was rhetorical, but that's my point. They're not going to patrol the border.

[–] santa@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

Of course. Double down donny clown taco cart.
