Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Its the law, now serenade us with the tale of how Joleen took your man.

[–] Malgas@beehaw.org 30 points 3 days ago (6 children)

Okay, but can we still do the alternate lyrics where Jolene is some kind of eldritch horror?

🎶 He screams about you in his sleep
And when he wakes does not but weep
In terror, of the one they call Jolene. 🎵

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 20 points 3 days ago

Not genderbending 👍

Jack White was man enough to sing it as it is, 15+ years ago:

Reminds me of Michael Buble's cover of "Santa Baby" where he changed it to "Santa Buddy" to make it less gay(?) and it absolutely did not do that.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 15 points 2 days ago

You don’t need to genderbend your songs if they genderbend you.

[–] JustARegularNerd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 41 points 3 days ago (5 children)

What about gay love songs?

I kissed a boy and I liked it, the taste of his cherry ChapStick. I kissed a boy just to try it, I hope my girlfriend don't mind it.

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 42 points 3 days ago

Lesbians who sing it get to be bisexual for the next three minutes.

[–] CelloMike@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Put this on our (gay) wedding playlist to confuse everyone, went very well

ménage a garage

💀💀💀

[–] chewables@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago

Literally cannot hear the original anymore without singing these lyrics, Sub Radio messed me up so bad (and I love it)

Also definitely adding it to our wedding playlist to sow confusion, such a good idea!

[–] red_tomato@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Gay love songs stay gay love songs.

Don't need to gender bend shit.

steady and simple surf guitar riff

GIRL!

I wanna take you to a gay bar!

I wanna take you to a gay bar, gay bar, gay bar!

I was delighted when I went to a Korean karaoke, and on the machine, Gay Bar from Electric Six was there.

One of my best memories.

Which is the line they had to actually censor in the radio and music video, because this was 2003 and everyone was still in post 9/11 - pre Iraq 2 "and I'm proud to be an American/freedom fries" style insanity.

The FCC can suck on my cock and choke on my balls.

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

At the GAY BAR‽

I am allowed to change the song to make it more gay.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 12 points 2 days ago

I really appreciated Kings of Leon's cover of Dancing on My Own. That gravelly ass belt of "I'm not the girl you're taking home!" Is just incredible 😆

I didn't really understand the song Take Me To Church on an emotional level until I heard Annapantsu's gay woman cover. Then it all made sense.

[–] wer2@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Sooo... No to "I Kissed a Boy and I liked it"?

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

If you do that, then next time around you have to sing "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy".

Damn straight! What are some of the best gay karaoke songs?

[–] Alaknar@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 days ago

Damn straight!

I think not!

Gay or camp? I know a lot more camp than gey

[–] Baggie@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago

If it's worth belting out, it's worth ignoring your gender and sexuality for imo

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

There's a song called Spooky (originally by Classic IV) where one of the lines is him proposing to the girl on Halloween. There's a couple covers made by girls: the first one is aligned to the girl's POV where she gets proposed to, but the second one has the girl proposing to him, which is way more based imo

Is it gay if I pretend to straddle a battleship cannon while performing “If I Could Turn Back Time”?

[–] Captain_Buddha@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not if you're wearing the strappy leather outfit to match, no.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 4 points 2 days ago

Damn I knew I did something wrong

[–] caboose2006@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

What if I'm a straight man singing Melissa Ethridge? Haha! Checkmate!

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

"Islands in the stream" is great song to sing for two grown men.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago

Huge dude with a deep voice and I love doing heart for karaoke. They didn't use many pronouns now I'm thinking about it, but no one ever listens to "these dreams" the same again.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified..

[–] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago

Cuz I'm a black magic woman, I'm tryna make a devil outta... you.

That doesn't really rhyme does it.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 5 points 3 days ago

I'll remember this next time I sing "Short Dick Man"

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

There was a cover of a song playing one time, and the singer didn't genderbend it and I felt like cheering.
