- The most active comm in the whole Threadiverse is !technology@lemmy.world
- You can check !fediverse@lemmy.world and !fedimemes@feddit.uk to see what's happening in the Fediverse.
- For drama between people, we have this: !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com
- Same thing, but more political: !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
- The piracy comm: !piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com
- There are other software for the Threadiverse such as mbin and piefed. Don't assume everyone is using Lemmy
- Currently the popular Lemmy alternative is Piefed
- Maybe some past Threadiverse events/lore for context in a few rare discussions that might happen and have happened.
- Most users in the Threadiverse are FOSS enthusiasts
- A rough idea of how federation works to understand why some stuff are the way they are (e.g. fetching comms unknown by your instance, defederation, phantom comments, etc.)
- There are some LLM bots (unidentified as such) roaming here as well. Be sure to block and report them.
- This place might look inactive compared to Reddit. We are trying to grow organically. Bear with us.
- If you want to help smaller communities out, try using the Scaled sort. It gives a boost to smaller comms in your feed.
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

This post is violating two.
I'm gonna try to be as neutral about this as possible:
-
lemmy.ml, lemmygrad.ml, hexbear.net are mostly filled with self proclaimed "Marxist-Leninists" that support the USSR and PRC...
-
You can block instances in account settings...
Use this info however you want to
I used to be the guy saying "Hey, they're not that bad" until I get a comment removed for a stupid fucking reason". Why are mods such pathetic power tripping losers? I'm a community mod. I don't delete comments, even though I occasionally see ones that annoy me.
lemmy.ml defederated from ani.social ages ago, so OP is at least spared on that front.
Lemmy.ml has some pretty active communities on it. Might be worth it for OP to look over their most active communities and see if any interest them. If so, you have the option of blocking communities instead of the whole instance.
Lemmygrad and hexbear pretty much stick to their sociopolitical beliefs. If that's not your bag, then no real loss in blocking those instances.
Nope. Zero tolerance for .ml communities. Even if I'd otherwise be interested, their admins are so unpleasant that I would not recommend anyone participate in them.
One thing I've noticed is that, if a community looks dead, you can post in it and people will still see it. Like, there are communities where there hasn't been a post in four months, but then someone posts in it, and it gets 10-12 replies. This seems to be very different from Reddit, where inactive communities would never make it to your front page, even if you were subscribed to them.
So, don't be disappointed if you find a community about something you're interested in, but it looks inactive. There might actually be like dozen people who will see your post and want to talk about it.
You mentioned music and manga in another post; a couple of related ones I'm subscribed to are:
Learn how to block people, communities, and instances. Personally, I'm not into anime, so I block the ani.social instance and whatever anime communities start up on other instances.
Not into sports so I block most sports comms.
I also block users whose names are just too narcissistic, banal, or vulgar.
This.
The vast majority of content here is posted by a few dozen users.
Blocking a few of them really changes the tone.
Depends on what you like! https://lemmyverse.net/communities
Oh- and if you’re looking for the right app, I highly recommend voyager.
So, I see you joined ani.social and you have made mention of enjoying Japanese media elsewhere in this thread. In that case, I have some community recommendations for you:
- !anime@ani.social - The most active community for anime discussion (disclosure - I am a community mod)
- !manga@ani.social - The most active community for manga discussion (disclosure - I am a community mod)
- !lightnovels@ani.social - Community for Japanese light novels
- !animemes@ani.social - Memes, but anime
- !anime_irl@ani.social - Other anime memes
There are plenty of other communities out there for specific pieces of media, if you are looking for those as well. Some of the more active ones I am aware of:
- !frieren@ani.social - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Season 2 is airing right now!
- !dungeonmeshi@ani.social - Delicious in Dungeon
- !gundam@ani.social - General Gundam community (disclosure - I am a community mod)
- !bocchitherock@sopuli.xyz - Bocchi the Rock
- !onepiece@lemmy.world - One Piece
- !overlord@sopuli.xyz - Overlord
- any of the communities on bookwyr.me - Ascendance of a Bookworm
Welcome!! What are you interested in? There are a lot of communities here, but unfortunately not quite as many as the other place. >_> However, it's easy to create new ones!
To contradict what the other kind commenter said, for an app I recommend Boost for Lemmy. ;)
I like discussing music, Mysteries, Japanese media, etc
I have a rock music community that I would love for someone to breathe life into. I'm not really sure what to do with it.
/c/rock_music@lemmy.world
Nice! So (assuming you're on a PC), you want to click on "communities" at the top and then search for whatever. I personally like these ones: Bandcamp, Music, Indieheads, and anime. Remember to click "all" when you're searching!
Also: there are some quirky places here, like !bench@lemmy.world. It's just pictures of benches around the world. I love it.
Yo! Thanks for the bench shout out. It reminds me I have a good one that I found in my picture library recently that I must post.
Of course dude! I still need to post more random benches in Japan!!
Those are honestly my favourite.
Is there a way with mobile? Currently using Voyager
On Voyager, just use the search button with the magnifying glass on the bottom right.
probably, but I use Boost so I can't help you haha. Surely someone else will chime in, but I'm sure with enough poking around on the app you should be able to find it.
This may sound like a dumb question and I already have accounts for it but would I need different accounts to join certain communities? I currently have shit just works and club account
No, any of your accounts should be able to see all communities you might wish to join.
There's an exception to that, but it's not worth worrying about for ages. This may be less likely, as you're on ani.social and that should be the instance best aligned with your interests; once you're used to Lemmy, you may find that a community you want is on an instance that isn't federated with your instance. In that case it's easy to export your profile and move.
I don't think so. I only have a lemmy.world account and so far I've been able to access everything.
Well this is a very, um, specific recommendation, but LemmyNSFW was the go to place for adult content on Lemmy but it recently died and has been replaced with Fedinsfw.app. You know, in case you need a specialized alt...
Hello!
Do you like word games/crosswords? Check out !crossword@lemmy.world and !nytconnections@lemmy.world
This thread (and community) is kinda the starter pack: https://threadiverse.link/lemmy.ca/post/40160493
Other than that, search for your interests and sift through /all a little, you should be able to build up your subs pretty quick.
And thanks for being on Lemmy! Try to keep in mind that all the less-active-than-you'd-hope communities need your help. Engage where you can to support the community building effort, it makes a difference here.
This. I was just thinking about it this morning for some reason. "I wish my niche Lemmy communities were more active. Wait. I'm part of the reason they're not! Time to post more."
there’s only about 30 active subs, most people here are ultra left wing and feel that downvoting and yelling insults at people with opinions different from them are their version of activism
enjoy ☺️
I notice this too.
So, out of curiousity, why are you on Lemmy if that's how you feel?
It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make to spend less time on American platforms
Makes sense I guess. I don't experience this downvoting behavior though, probably because I'll block any magazine where this happens.
