Exclusive: poll across 15 countries finds ‘deep mistrust’, with majority doubting US would come to their aid in an attack

European confidence in an American “security guarantee” has hit a historic low, a survey suggests, with only one in 10 people across 15 countries seeing the US as an ally and majorities in all doubting it would come to their aid if they were attacked.

The survey, published on Wednesday by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) thinktank before critical G7 and Nato summits in France and Turkey over the coming weeks, revealed “deep European distrust in the US”, the authors said.

It also showed that, while many Europeans felt relations with Washington would improve once Donald Trump leaves office, they were increasingly ready in the meantime to protect themselves against US unreliability by bolstering Europe’s defence.

I'm surprised it's that high.

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 1 points 15 hours ago

We have more than 10% of people who want to emulate the USA, I'm not surprised some of them are stupid enough to think that.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 1 points 15 hours ago

srsly. Gotta find that one guy and tell them how it is

[–] Ungraded@lemmy.ml 2 points 16 hours ago

I doubt 1 in 10 US Government Officials would see them self as ally to Europe

[–] mellowistheyellow@lemmy.zip 5 points 23 hours ago

The US is a fucking jokeeeee hahahaha

[–] Mrkawfee@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Not surprising. The US is now a rogue state.

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 0 points 17 hours ago

It isn't that the US has changed. It is the same as it has always been. It didn't come to Europe's "aid" until it had to defend itself against the Axis. It has been a American propogated myth that the US aids any other country. The US creates situations to take advantage of other countries and make it seem a benevolent action. The only change is that Trump is too stupid to get the messaging right and says the quiet parts out loud while scamming the American people for his own gain thereby removing America's political mask and showing America's real face to the world.

Good to see hypocritical European politicians finally opening their eyes

[–] wpb@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

They surveyed politicians? I thought they asked citizens.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 97 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I’m an American and I see our federal government and corporations as openly hostile to me too.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yep was about to say that myself. As an American America is not my Ally.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Another American here also feeling the same.

It really sucks. i hope you and your loved ones will be able to live in a free and democratic country with a social safety net some day. All the best to you!

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So we still have a chance with European girls, is what you're saying.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

Nab one and become European if you can.

Thats probably a lower rate than current European support for.. hitler. or putin.

Someone in the previous comments said Amerrica is a cancer, but I bet we probably still have higher polling rate than actual cancer. ..Probably.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

I’m sure it is. There seems to be a serious Nazi problem all throughout Europe right now too

I can cut out cancer, irradiate it, treat it with chemo

All I want it's for the US to fuck off, sit in the corner and stop interfering for the benefit of a handful of rich cunts who will happily watch the world burn, just to accumulate more of something they already have more than they could ever use

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 10 points 2 days ago

As an American: fair. We have been proving to be quite the assholes (understatement) lately.

I hope that someday we can gain that trust back but that won't be for quite sometime and only if we can make a major turn for the better.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 18 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Im guessing that one in ten is the european maga equivalents.

[–] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Which seems low because in many European countries the pin striped Nazi MAGA like parties that have long been feted by the republicans are polling much higher than that (UK, Germany, France)

[–] No1@aussie.zone 3 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

I shit you not. I have seen red MAGA caps here in Australia, and they are not on US tourists.

I can't even......

[–] Starik@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

I believe you call them bogans?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 21 hours ago

Ive heard that. sounds crazy but then I look at how the nazi flags are not uncommon with their trump and its like huh. they just love to love on each other. seriously maga caps, nazi symbol, confederate flag. its all in the same bucket here.

[–] phar@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You're looking for the word morons

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 days ago

Same same really

Salt of the earth, common clay of the mid west...

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

1 in 10 ? that number is too damn high !

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 2 points 1 day ago

There is always that guy or girl with an american flag tattooed that tells you how great it is and that tgey wishes they could move to texas or something

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

80 years of investing in soft power down the drain. I'm the nineties people looked up to America. Every movie maar you interested in American culture.

Great again yet?

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Era of great American media seems to have ended. So few good movies or shows anymore. Just one cop drama show after another and 5 star out of 10 rated movies. Even reddit sucks. Used to train AI and run by a zionist war crimes cheerleader.

[–] Babalugats@feddit.uk 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

majorities in all doubting it would come to their aid if they were attacked.

I do believe (maybe naively) if Europe was attacked, that the US would help, probably wouldn't need them, but it would be more to their advantage to help, than if they didn't. But I don't trust the US in terms of keeping their "house" in order. The big companies that are around the world heavily lobbying, breaking laws and encouraging blatant corruption, came from there and now the rest of the world have to deal with them. They also voted Trump in.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I do believe (maybe naively) if Europe was attacked, that the US would help, probably wouldn't need them, but it would be more to their advantage to help, than if they didn't.

But the bozo we have in charge here is entirely transactional. So if Europe were attacked, the US might send help, but might send all out troops back via Greenland, then decide that it's only fair for "Europe" to hand it over in exchange.

[–] Siegehammer85@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I believe that if Europe is going to be attacked it will be Russia supported by the US or the US and Russia working together. The billionaires and the GoP hate Europe, our regulations and not prioritizing corporations over people's rights. They want to own us or destabilize us so they can take us down. The US has been our enemy for 50 years, look at what they did to the middle east, that's our fate if we don't because self sufficient.

[–] Babalugats@feddit.uk 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

No doubt he would. He would probably ask the British Royal Family to hand over Canada as well.. 😅

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Iran has shown that the US military is toothless against a midweight power, so dont worry too much. And even now very few Americans would sign up to hurt Canadians. Canadian approval of Americans is super low, but Canada and Canadians still poll extremely high in the US. 80% approval of Canada, right now, although thats down from 91% two years ago.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

No, he'd probably settle for Princess Charlotte. (But those attackers better be quick about it; in a few years she will be too old....)

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

There is always one mother fucker!!!

[–] Hairyfishnuts@feddit.online 4 points 2 days ago

Lack of proper plumbing has caused this issue.
