Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Totally ready to take a ton of heat here as a straight arguably white man but I just dont get lip injections, specifically the ones where people look like ducks having an allergic reaction. I know it can be done more subtly to the point where it might not look obviously out of the norm but even then I still dont get it.

Specifically with the large puffy ones, do they think it makes them look better? Whenever I see it in the wild it looks horrendous from my pov. Are there dudes out there who are attracted to huge puffy lips? I understand the way others present their appearance is not for me, not everything cosmetically is done to be "attractive", and my opinion doesn't count but it just seems like a super strange choice.

Is there something Im missing about lip fillers? It just seems like an expensive way of looking weird.

im down voting. I don't feel this is unpopular.

The real key here is that there are 5 good lip injections for every duck face. The ratio is changing as the "style" has changed. But the real key is that good lip injections are not noticable. And overdone lip injections have become popular.

I don't think there are any good lip injections. People with body dysmorphia may think so though.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 8 hours ago

yeah im not changing my vote.

I imagine its a reverse survivor-ship bias - where the odd ones out who purposefully went for duck lips or had allergic reactions stick out like a sore thumb, and thus we don't notice all the people that got subtle jobs done on their lips.

Similar to getting teeth done. We easily notice the people who got shiny white freakishly straight "Turkey Teeth", but not the others who opted for more natural looking teeth replacements.

There's a certain group of people where this is the beauty standard in their echo chamber.

The part where you misunderstand is that it's not meant to look like duck lips. It's actually supposed to be a goose.

Goose lips for the women, and goose step for the men.

I'm a very gay goddess, and I think thinner lips are more attractive, because lips are gross and weird and I want to see less of them.

But I know a lady who thinks big cartoon lips are attractive, it's one of her fetishes. I don't understand it at all.

De gustibus non est disputandum.

But I don't get a lot of plastic surgery either. Some people also put on enough make-up to trigger my fear of clowns... Some get the ugliest dog breed, buy the most hideous car model available... Dunno why they do it, but it's a thing.

I think you can probably just leave it there. I'm not dunking on you, either. I don't know if it's possible to understand everything people find attractive. The famous Napoleon telling Josephine to not wash? Horrifying to me. But I've met people IRL who dig that? Hope they find their match and live happily ever after. Humans are weird and wonderful, maybe not always both at the same time (in my opinion).

It makes young people all look like they are well into their 40's

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I get hem because the filler material pulls water in a way that prevents chapped lips. It's awesome

[–] glups@piefed.social 4 points 13 hours ago

I think you just talked me into it

It's because it looks inhuman, or like they have an infection. I've seen a few horrendous examples and I question their sanity. It's gross

Also downvoted for not being an unpopular opinion. I'm 100% with you on this.

[–] coolmultitool@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I questioned this for myself too, my best guess was a doll fetish or something, where men are attracted by doll like women. It's definitely not my thing. But to each there own I guess.

Is that what the labubus are based on?? Huh I never knew.

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 2 points 14 hours ago

I hear its a status thing now...you get them because you can afford them. Quite weird.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

DSL bro.

Yeah, it looks horrible I agree.

[–] lath@piefed.social 2 points 15 hours ago

Psychological viewpoint: engorging the lips may be a sign of low self-esteem or a feeling of oppression. Perhaps it is a hidden feeling of not having one's voice heard, of being ignored at every step or a desire to be heard.

[–] naught@sh.itjust.works 1 points 13 hours ago

Why breast implants? Why lipo? Why blue hair? Why GLP-1s? Why earrings? Why tattoos? People have been modifying their bodies in unnatural ways for beauty or ceremony or etc. for millennia. You don't like the current beauty trend because you're an older white man. It's not for you. My skinny jeans aren't as cool anymore, so I have some baggy ones. Frankly I don't like it either, but thankfully I don't have to participate or judge

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Yeah they suck

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 1 points 15 hours ago

I don't think this is as unpopular as you think.

There's a reason duck lips gets lampooned
