A $46 million parade, the first in Washington DC in more than 30 years, unfolded against a backdrop of protests and political violence

Washington DC was locked down and the capital’s airspace closed to flights as 6,500 troops marched down Constitution Avenue and helicopters flew overhead, fulfilling a long-standing ambition of Trump to stage a military parade — the first held in the American capital in more than 30 years.

Organisers for Saturday’s parade said they were expecting “hundreds of thousands” to attend but images of empty seats in stands along the parade route suggested turnout may not have been as high as hoped. It is possible the poor weather kept many at home.

The celebrations came just hours after a Democratic politician and her husband were shot dead in their Minnesota home by a man believed to be impersonating a police officer. Threats against other politicians in Texas were made on a day of widespread unrest and protests against the Trump administration, timed to coincide with Saturday’s $46 million event.

I pray that this was his last birthday he celebrates above ground.

If Trump becomes a mole person we are all doomed.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 25 minutes ago

It's already hard to tell his ass from his face, we might be there already

Hopefully he meets a peaceful end with an appropriate tie around his neck that shows how much people appreciate his life's works.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 3 points 59 minutes ago

Or when his overly long tie gets sucked into the toilet on Air Force One while it’s struggling to evacuate a series of Mc Donalds shit pebbles. Preferably caught on tape and posted to TikTok.

[–] xJc13@quokk.au 34 points 2 hours ago

I'm glad it went so poorly.

[–] xenomor@lemmy.world 2 points 49 minutes ago

I think the location of that parade reviewing stand will make a great place to hang him upside down for public review.

Jesus H Christ, Someone teach Trump how to salute…

I love how they all look at him like the dumbass he is.

[–] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago

Such an embarrassing piece of douche-garbage.

[–] Pnut@lemm.ee 6 points 2 hours ago

He can't be told anything. And that's before considering his capacity to learn.

[–] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Didn't they give Obama shit because he saluted even though he didn't go to the military?

[–] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 19 points 2 hours ago

They'd give him shit either way.

Salute - He's not military!

No salute - He's not respecting the troops!

Presidents didn't salute until Reagan. Like many of the stupid things presidents do, Reagan started the bullshit, trump amplified it to 11.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 4 points 2 hours ago

And then bitched when he didn't

[–] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 hours ago

I think it is funny he salutes like he's lost a war.

Organisers for Saturday’s parade said they were expecting “hundreds of thousands” to attend

Ah, bless 'em.

[–] Rozz@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

it's possible the poor weather kept them at home

It's also possible that's not the reason

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 7 points 39 minutes ago

It didn’t stop the protestors. Millions came out.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 16 points 4 hours ago

Opens up Southern euphemism to standard English translation book

Yes I agree.

Right. Because I'm going to buy a ticket to DC, rent a hotel room, tell my friends I'm going... and then not go because it's raining.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 135 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

Meanwhile, millions of people showed up to protests in DC and other places with equally rainy forecasts. But sure, news, blame the weather instead of the fascism.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 21 points 2 hours ago

To be fair, that article was overall pretty plainly stating that the protests were overwhelmingly more well attended. Yes they had one line that raised the possibility of weather as a factor, but I think anyone but Trump could see the facts as presented in the story telling the real story.

Also went out of their way to characterize the protests as peaceful and the only politicians under violent threat were Democrats, despite the magnitude of protests.

What a sad, low energy, failing perade

[–] JustAnotherPodunk@lemmy.world 47 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

This brings me joy.

Nothing is better than getting under his skin.

[–] iltoroargento@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 8 hours ago

I mean I wish he'd have put some bleach under his skin way back when so we'd not be dealing with this specific scenario, rn:/

[–] Machinist@lemmy.world 58 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I like the "No Kings!" messaging, simple and pointed. We need a slogan that is short and sweet for the soldiers to use. Something that shows them they have agency in this.

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 5 points 1 hour ago

Sic semper tyrannis.

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 39 points 8 hours ago

Maybe a secret service man will stab this mf in the back, then whisper..."Tunnel Snakes Rule"

[–] Zier@fedia.io 36 points 8 hours ago

The 'weather' kept people away. You mean the cold front of fascism that has been pouring in???

[–] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 16 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Someone should have recruited lots of obese men in army uniforms for the parade.

[–] ZeffSyde@lemmy.world 9 points 4 hours ago

ICE recruited them first.

[–] supernicepojo@lemmy.world 24 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

For a man from hollywood he sure is bad at producing. Reagan was better at literally everything, where are our leaders!? Reagan was still a terrible leader…

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 hour ago

He’s from Atlantic City by way of NY. His former handlers were from Hollywood, but they’ve all left by now.

[–] burgerpocalyse@lemmy.world 14 points 9 hours ago

i did my part

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Poor widdle guy got his ego bruised. Let’s make him some chicken soup.

[–] capt_wolf@lemmy.world 14 points 9 hours ago

Or maybe he'd prefer some chicken... tacos? Who doesn't love a good taco?

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 2 points 5 hours ago

Don't give a shit about his feelings. His actions have killed countless people, he needs to hang
