This Azores erasure will not stand.

[–] cyan_mess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 51 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

If you think that's impressive, just look at the size of Spain compared to Spain 1000152489

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 11 points 3 hours ago

Wow, it covers Spain almost entirely

[–] Cjwi@lemmy.world 24 points 11 hours ago

Man, the mercator projection really messes up the perspective, I never would have guessed!!

[–] Tja@programming.dev 13 points 11 hours ago

So thats why the Portuguese description on products is always smaller than the Spanish one!

Jamón ^presunto^

[–] Pk_thunder@sh.itjust.works 29 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

This might be my favorite shitpost of all time haha

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I don't get it. The joke is "haha it's actually not a misleading projection"... ?

[–] owsei@programming.dev 10 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Mercator's deformation show up when you move countries north/south. Since Portugal only moved slightly East the apparent size basically didn't change. (You can even see and compare real Portugal just left of the red projection)

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago

Right. The reason I don't get the post is that I thought everyone would know and see this ^

I feel like this post is taking a picture of a cube, calling it a cube, then I'm supposed to doubt that it's a cube. Which I wouldn't...

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Well not exactly because it's still a misleading projection, because Spain is also incorrectly projected given how far north it is

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

I meant misleading in a relative sense. In any case, this post makes no sense to me.

[–] assassinatedbyCIA@lemmy.world 25 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The mercator projection really oversells the size of portugal. If you ordered a large pizza you’ll have to eat it outside of the country.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 10 hours ago

So true, it fits on my phone screen. A large pizza definitely wouldn't fit.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 148 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Can't believe Portugal is nearly the same size as Portugal

[–] wuffah@lemmy.world 33 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

They are completely different colors, however. 🤔

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 26 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Red Portugal is best Portugal

The Portugal she told you not to worry about

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Oooh, I'm a rebel just for kicks, now

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

You're the man

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They would be the exact same size if Portugal didn't have that Lisboa sized gap by its western border

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 26 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Holy shit, I don't think you can just go around saying "Lisboa sized gap," wtf.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

My apologies

A lisboa shaped gap

[–] fulcrummed@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

There is no one accepted standard for a Lisboa. All Lisboas are beautiful in their own right.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago

A large Portugal the size of a small Portugal.

Can you put Portugal A little to the left so I can see Spain better?

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 21 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

If you line it up right, the borders are exactly the same shape! What a crazy coincidence!

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 6 points 10 hours ago

Get more evidence for continental drift.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 60 points 1 day ago

The size of two Portugals compared to most of France:

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 16 points 23 hours ago

What I would like to know is how big it is compared to Iberian Peninsula.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 12 points 22 hours ago

Thank you, I've always wondered how their sizes compare, this is a great visual representation. So clear.
