7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

Teslas are generally speaking good cars but the Cybertruck was fucking dumb. It's like the Simpsons episode where Homer designs a car. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the first thing Musk has actually designed himself.

Markets are working, it seems. Just a bit slowly.

Tesla initial product quality is in the shitter and has been for years. I don't know anyone who owns a new Tesla who didn't have to send it for repairs in their first year of ownership to correct production defects, some of them multiple times. From accounts I've read, the Cybertruck is worse than other Tesla models.

Once sorted, they seem OK, except for all the design quirks that compromise safety and usability. And I have no idea about their long-term durability.

As a side note, I know someone who owns a Roadster built in the pre-Musk Tesla era. That thing is extraordinarily well-built and has never given the owner trouble, except for speeding tickets. Ownership by Musk has been a value destroyer for Tesla.

is this him trying to be an edgy teenager again, trying that cyberpunk.

Hopefully some niche enthusiasts club doesn't build up around it and make them the new Delorean.

What!? The car of the future?

I can't wait for my kids to finally stop pointing them out and saying, "Dad, there's that car you hate."

I'm a school bus driver. The only cars that elementary school kids get excited about are the ones that piss me off: cybertrucks, teslas in general, corvettes, lamborghinis. No other cars exist for kids.

I like loudly pointing them out to my wife with, "Hey babe, look. It's one of those Nazi cars!"

It's really fun when there are other people around, especially the owner.

[–] acchariya@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

Pretty soon you will Nazi them any more. They will be Reich there with the delorean in terms of rarity.

There goes one of the surest indicators of people you should avoid. Much as I hate the ugly things, they were an awesome way for people with bad politics to tell on themselves.

Thank god we still have thin blue line punisher bumper stickers.

Fuk that Nazi

The Tesla bubble has popped. Every earnings call will be worse than the last, and will be followed by a stock slide. There is no saving it, no rehabbing it's image. Trump may keep it alive with bailouts, but Tesla will be bankrupt the moment Trump is out of office.

Holy shit. They were still making new ones?!

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 77 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Not really. There's a massive stockpile of them that they're trying to flog to the US govt. That might have become much more difficult since last week.

Why on Earth would someone design a cab to only seat two people? The only time in the last two years that I’ve used a cab, it was to travel with a group.

The best guess I can figure is that an insufferable loser like Elon can’t fathom having two or more people that want to be in the same car as him.

How can a company expect to sell over 750,000 cars in 3 years, sell less than 100,000, and not see horrendously tanking stock values? They must have lost so much money on the cybertrucks.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 27 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

I'm pretty sure that Tesla stock is basically a money laundering scheme that allows oligarchs to pay him large amounts of money for being the one to openly fuck shit up (eg taking the loss to gain control of twitter, being the face of DOGE, openly buddying up with Trump, seeing what the response would be to giving a Nazi salute on live TV, etc).

I suspect he's essentially their lightning rod.

I guess the demand for wheeled dumpsters wasn't as high as they thought.

When my son was six, he thought it was so cool. "If I drew a cybertruck, that's how Id draw it."

My son, 9, now says "A cybertruck looks like a 6 year old drew it."

I will always love that my kid has more awareness than Elon Musk.

Fortunately they are so terrible and Tesla is so terrible at providing parts that these will all be off the road within a few years.

The only person that should own a cybertruck is that one youtuber whose whole career and life is about the car.

PS. I have been saying this a lot lately for the memes. Like i tried the new star wars galactic racers game and concluded that the only person that should pay 70 for it is the above.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 61 points 18 hours ago (19 children)

Remember to point and laugh at every Cybertruck you see (while you can)! They knew who Musk was, and supported him anyway...

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

[–] skooma_king@piefed.social 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

I’ve just been flipping them the bird from the get go. Going to continue that strategy

[–] Janx@piefed.social 1 points 7 hours ago

Please be careful out there. There's crazy people everywhere! Sure, they may go to prison if they shoot you, etc, but you only get one life...
