Another day, another Cybertruck being towed from somewhere nobody really ought to need a tow from. Take a look, Toyota Sienna to the rescue.

I don't get why people use cars to drive onto beaches. Why not park nearby then walk a bit?

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

As someone who lives in a region that gets a lot of snow, I know that basically any vehicle can get stuck. When you get unlucky, or do something dumb, you can end up in a position where you simply don't have any traction.

But that's the thing, you can usually avoid the situation by not doing something dumb, like driving right up onto the beach. And if you are driving on an unstable surface like sand or snow, accelerate slowly and decisively, don't floor it and then stop or you'll roll back into the rut you just made.

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I'd also assume sand driving is like snow driving in that appropriate tires are far more critical to performance than the vehicle drivetrain

Edit: holy crap I can write coherent sentences! honest!

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

I think I read at one point also lowering the pressure in the tire helps as well, but not sure how low you could safely go. You want more surface area on sand.

Edit: someone lower in the comments says 15psi

Sounds like someone has never driven on a beach.

That video has a distinctive lack of people pointing and laughing and I am so disappointed.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Maybe everyone was tired from all the pointing and laughing when the Cyberidiot first turned up at the beach?

Source:
A mom in a Toyota Sienna pulls a Cybertruck out of a treacherous sandpit

What 4WD truck is unable to get out of this?
The Toyota probably has front wheel drive only.

And who didn't get the memo yet that Cybertrucks are notoriously useless in any real offroad situation.

Fuck Elon, Fuck TESLA and it's a disguised blessing because it helps other e-car manufacturers get a slice of market. Yay!

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The recent Toyota Sienna has 4WD option and can very good power by using the battery. After seeing the Technology Connections video I think if you want a bigger car the Sienna is the best.

I inherited an older Sienna last year and its been eye-opening just how incredibly practical minivans are for almost any use case where one might want/need a large vehicle. I keep saying that most truck drivers who actually want to haul shit don't realize that what they actually want is a minivan. Same goes for most large SUV drivers. Just get a minivan!

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago

the Sienna has been the best choice for a couple decades now

[–] Little8Lost@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The article says thats its one of the rare 2 wheelers

[–] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Says that it Could be one of the <200 sold

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, you only see the rear wheels spin. Also, the Toyota looks to not be in the sand pit.

On one level i do have pity for anyone who got grifted by a nazi and wasted a bunch of money only to commit themselves to an endless stream of repairs and recalls while getting laughed at everywhere they go, all for a shit car with no resale value.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 62 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (3 children)

Regular Tesla drivers who bought their vehicle several years ago, before Musk showed very clear signs of being a Nazi POS? Yeah I have some sympathy for them.

But Cybertruck users knew exactly who they were buying from. They deserve no sympathy.

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 8 points 3 weeks ago

Pity, not sympathy. They still got grifted and will be laughed anywhere they go. I pity them that.

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 7 points 3 weeks ago

You mean in 2013?

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Well, not the first few batches of cyber truck. I think it went up for preorder before musk showed he was a nazi, and sold through probably 3-4 batches.

But after that? I agree with you.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

You were able to cancel those preorders. It’s not like they already paid for the truck. Worst case was people who paid the 1k to make it a binding order rather than a reservation on a waiting list. (Suckers. Why would you preorder a car?!)

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

Literal nazi, yeah, but in ... checks notes ... Nov '23 it was long known that he was off his rockers in a very right-wing way. And I mean widely known through his Twitter nazification and his association with the bigliest of them all.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Oh, fair enough.

The cybertrash is the dumbest & ugliest vehicle i ve seen. Whoever bought one was very clearly in dire need to make a political statement, and only had a tangential need in a car

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 4 points 3 weeks ago

It's either political or tgey fell fir the badass Armageddon vehicle that can drive over your vehicle if i want to schtick. Either way, it has to be some sort of IQ teat that people just failed. It's even more disappointing when they leave burger country.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

I was in Florida this lasr weekend and saw a CRAZY amount - like a dozen a day

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 23 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

I'm extremely impressed by everyone's actions in the video. Normally people who are stuck think you need to spin the wheels at 100mph to get unstuck rather than maintaining traction by using very little throttle. People using straps or chains typically think you need to "get a run at it" and take up the slack by accelerating away at 30mph, only to have their bumper ripped off. Here, both drivers did an excellent job.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

If it was attached to the bumper, it was never going to work anyway.

"getting a run at it" often does work if slow and steady doesn't work (i.e the pulling vehicle doesn't have enough traction). But you need enough slack to get the pulling car moving. If you just give it throttle on the spot, you'll dig in and have two stuck cars, at which point you might as well get a tractor to save time on pulling them out.

If you're going off roading though, there's other equipment to help you out. Have a shovel in the trunk. Some sort of boards or something that you can put under the wheels so they stop digging deeper through the dirt. I reckon could've gotten that cyberdumpster out with no pulling, not that I'd take that thing off roading (or drive it in the first place).

What most surprises me is that in the video they actually put something under the wheels of the cyberdumpster so clearly someone there has previous experience getting vehicles unstuck. If it was the cyberdumpster driver, it begs the question of why he'd take such a ridiculous vehicle off roading anyway. I've had better luck in FWD sedans, let alone cars with torsen-based AWD (Quattro!) or proper 4wd with lockable diffs.

For a moment there I wondered how can someone be seen in this situation and not die of embarrassment but them I remembered only huge assholes own those.

[–] frank@sopuli.xyz 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Man that tow strap is going to a comically mysterious place inside the cabin. I cannot believe whatever it was attached to didn't break

they just used the seatbelt
