I think it's fair to call me an elder lemming at this point, as I recall the reasons for both. I signed up on .world with my first account on the last day before the infamous APIocalypse.

Along with myself, a lot of us were putting effort into posting good stuff, upvoting, and generally having a lot of positive interactions. Someone on !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world posted a picture with a can of beans with a caption along the lines of "I hear that lemmy will upvote anything. Here's a picture of beans". It quickly became the most upvoted post of all time.

As lemmy culture developed into a deeply political space, it began flooding !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world with American politics. People got sick of it, and people started doing "we're posting x now until politics stops". There had been a couple rounds of various themes, and then someone announced "that's it, I'm sick of politics everywhere. We're posting corn". Cornposting has become the default political purge over there.

to call me an elder lemming at this point,

Looks at profile age: 1 years 4 months.

Me (2 years 7 months): Huh, guess I'll just take my prehistoric ass out of here and go chip flints.

[–] TerHu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

well, they said their first account was on .world, and the one you checked the age of is on blahaj. so, an age discrepancy is to be expected.

[–] Maroon@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Ah, clearly age has affected my ability to read and comprehend. Thanks for correcting me.

Goes back to flint knapping

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I guess I’m from before time (3y).

[–] Dvixen@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We're old like dirt.

Or beans. Old like beans.

[–] BeanEater@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Did someone say beans? Old beans are still tasty

[–] mamg22@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Thanks for the explanation! I didn't use to check Lemmy frequently up until recently, so the cornposting has always been this strange thing i saw sometimes, but never understood it. Now it makes sense

Wait, there was a time before every post and comment chain became political? Sounds magical.

corn, beans and squash are known as the three sisters

history will say they were roommates.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"best friends who slept in the same bed probably because it was cheaper to have only one bed"

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Vegetable society was different back then.

[–] Little1Lost@gehirneimer.de 8 points 2 days ago

about the beans: look for top all time
After the wave of newcomers lowered lemmy started to have some "weekly" phases where other memes became the meta like the german pedalo or moths and many others.

But as a moth fren i bring some moth memes back from time to time :)

If someone could also explain why half the post titles have the word "rule" in them, that would also be helpful

[–] SacralPlexus@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Disclosure: I don’t know the full lore and I’m only answering because nobody else has.

My vague understanding is that this is unique to the ‘196’ community which has a community rule that every post must include the word “rule” in the title post. So it’s super common to see because it’s an active community. Beyond that I don’t really understand what the community is about as it seems to have a random variety of posts.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The 196 community has an (unenforced) rule that you must post every time you visit, so they're posts that are following the rule.

[–] KernelTale@programming.dev 1 points 22 hours ago

I didn't know that... I will fix that first thing tomorrow morning.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Butternut.

Lol!

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I was sick of seeing political stuff on the shitposting group so I started bombarding it with corn until it stopped. I had happened to have a bunch of corn pictures saved on my phone because I had flooded my friend's discord with corn pictures just to goof on her.

It spiraled into a glorious corn filled nightmare insanity, and as someone from Ohio, I appreciate that.

I think the beans came up later because people like to play with themes.

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No? The beans came before the corn...

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Then maybe the beans came first idk, I'm not gonna go back and check.

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I know, they came first, there were even Jeans in between. I'm sorry if I shattered your world, but I'm sure otherwise you are a really important person.

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It... Didn't really shatter my world, I really don't care if beans came first. I'm not that important and neither is like, any of this.

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

Don't act like this isn't the most important thing to you and that you have tried to claim Lemmy history

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I did start the corn thing though. corn man

It's not the most important things to me though, this is like, a very small shitposting community in a very small niche Reddit knock off.

Sorry if me saying I did something made you mad

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 1 points 1 hour ago

See its clearly something you desperately need everybody to know and believe

[–] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

thank you for this well-done psyop. we really need more non-political memes.

here, have a picture of the Three Sisters as a reward:

Hexbear has been Beanis posting for a long time now. I don't know how it started, but it's a significant part of that instance's content at this point
