So much worse than it sounds. This was an indoor race and it wasn't just running. They used "communal equipment such as ropes, sandbags, rowing machines and medicine balls"

She finished first, so there was poop smeared on everything for the racers behind her. She ruined everyone's race and potentially got people sick.

[–] Slashme@lemmy.world 68 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If it had been intentional, it would have been a brilliant strategy - take an early lead and shit on everything to slow everyone else down.

I can’t stop laughing

[–] Zagam@piefed.social 55 points 3 weeks ago

It was bad enough that athletes behind her were gagging and trying not to vomit. Now, hyrox did give those athletes time penalties.

She may have been #1 but #2 was right on her heels.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 36 points 3 weeks ago

And in her socks. Also her back and arms somehow.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 101 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Nice of her to apologize, but this is really on the officials and the organization for not pulling her out.

High-level athletes are always going to want to compete. They'll play through injury and discomfort to win. If it were up to them, they would and do put themselves in danger of further injury just to get out there and play. That's why coaches and staff are the ones who make decisions to bench players for injury and it's not left up to the players themselves.

[–] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree, it's not on her to withdraw herself from the competition. I don't think she owes an apology. If she won, she won. If it was unsafe for the other competitors the judges should have pulled her out.

I dont know. If literal shit is leaking from my ass to the point that i, and everything i touch, gets smeared with it, i believe i would have the good sense to seek out a bathroom. You know, instead of touching more things with my plague hands, and somehow expecting to win because i made my opponents gag from the shit smell.

You'll never get an unexpected and devastating 2nd place finish at your first Ironman triathlon with that attitude.

It's wild that she just kept on competing. Call me crazy but once I shit my pants in front of thousands of people I immediately get the fuck out if there.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 156 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

She got the runs, not the stops.

I feel sorry for these people when I read stories like these. They're pushing themselves so hard physically and emotionally, their head's in a weird place, their judgement is off and they end up humiliating themselves on the world stage. Virtually the entire world. The worst kind of fame. This person's life is over. They will forever be the point of ridicule by everyone.

Can you imagine waking up every day, your career is totally over, having to face that. Knowing that the whole world has seen what you did in the heat of the moment. You have let down every one who supported you, your family, and failed your life's goal in the most embarrassing way possible. To hide yourself away in miserable shame is the best you could possibly hope for.

And it just doesn't go away, now you have to get on camera to apologize and explain it away. You have to make statements. You have to watch clips of it over and over. Everywhere you go people are talking about you in hushed mocking wispers. Everything you do will have an asterisk near it. One fucked up moment overshadows everything else you will ever do from here on out. For the rest of your life.

That's a hard burden to carry.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Apparently, in her mind this was a Michael Jordan with the flu situation. She has pictures afterwards in a hospital bed getting an IV and bragging about how you have to do what you have to do.

Now all that said, I'm a little sympathetic, as apparently shitting yourself during marathons and the like is not uncommon, but this was some weird crossfit thing where you are indoors and constantly getting down on the floor for various reasons and using provided equipment, so anyone who came after her was wading through her poopies. I think you have to be capable of being very self-centered, at least temporarily, to be a truly elite competitive athlete, but somebody should have thought this one through better.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 9 points 3 weeks ago

Well, it's no one's obligation to validate someone, or be friends with them. When you put your entire self-worth in the hands of random people, this is exactly what happens. They treat you like a broken, tainted object.

The key is to pick a path where you are not well known, and don't give a shit about other people and what they have to offer.

Man at first I felt bad for her, but after reading the article…nah what a shitshow

[–] chickenf622@sh.itjust.works 31 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yeah if it was like a bit before the finish line I can see pushing through it, but it look like she got shit all over multiple pieces of equipment causing a huge health risk. Ignoring all of that stepping out of the race cause you shit yourself would probably make this a lot less news worthy and you would at least have some sympathy from people. Edit: fixed grammar

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yah thats where I landed as well…you had so many chances to withdraw but instead made a literal mess everywhere…yah thats just nasty. 🤮

Puma dropped her as a sponsor. It's the only reason she backed off and forfeited.

"I love my sponsor so much that I even Puma pants!"

[–] scrodumb@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 weeks ago

Okay in a 14 comment thread this is the second to make me chuckle. Saved.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 32 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

POO-MA!

Wish I could take credit for that one.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 weeks ago

Too bad they weren't known for pants, the Puma Pants Company would have loved to sponsor her.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 26 points 3 weeks ago

Wietrzyk's major sponsor, Puma, is distancing itself from the athlete by quietly removing "Joanna Wietrzyk x PUMA" clothing items from its website. But a spokesperson for Puma says there's "no change" to their partnership with Wietrzyk, telling CBC News in a statement Thursday that some landing pages were "unintentionally taken offline."

On social media, people have flooded the brand's comments with plays on "Puma," such as "Pooma," "Poopma" and "Poo Ma Pants."

She thought it was a competition of having the runs

The youths told her the coolest kids have drip

She heard she could make money streaming

For me, it's always a race when I have diarrhea

[–] maxthemummer@lemmus.org 9 points 3 weeks ago

Why it's called "the runs."

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Am I the only one impressed that she beat everyone else while shitting? Guess everyone else was grossed out.

[–] Baguette@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The article mentioned apparently some people slipped on it

I think if I was competing I'd not even try at that point. Might just dq myself

Nice PR apology. If she actually gave a shit she would have forfeit before it became an issue.

Holy... She kept going even after the diarrhea started? How did they not disqualify her once there was shit running down her legs? And the nerve to make all the other participants touch your shit just to win a race is something else. I know athletes need a competitive mindset but thats just disrespectful.

[–] limelight79@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

How did they not disqualify her once there was shit running down her legs?

From what I read elsewhere, it sounded like a situation the officials were simply unprepared to deal with, and there was nothing in the rules about it. Just not something that has happened before or had been thought of as a possibility. I have the impression this is a newer sport, not something that has been around for decades or even centuries, like running.

I guess it happens to marathon runners all the time, but they're generally on public streets outdoors (with the airflow advantages that implies) and the worst case is stepping in it and getting it on their shoes. This is a much more up-close sport (and indoors), like to the point where other competitors might have needed to do pushups in the same spot she did them. They tore out the carpet after her race.

It doesn't help that she posted "Go hard or go home. A win is a win" while getting an IV immediately afterwards.

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

It doesn't help that she posted "Go hard or go home. A win is a win" while getting an IV immediately afterwards.

Yeah I think she didnt exactly have a clear mind after winning a professional competition while sick and leaking diarrhea everywhere. But yeah it does make her sound very arrogant and disrespectful.

[–] Klanky@sopuli.xyz 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

And here I was thinking Hyrox was the original Oreo. I heard about this but had no idea ‘Hyrox’ was the name of the sport. 🤣

i had no idea what it was, so i looked on the wiki. a branded and licensed (i.e. for profit) exercise thing. kinda like crossfit, which is more about the workout regimen and less about the competitions. this one started with the competitions but all those competitors and wannabes still have to workout and train so there is several categories of licensed facilities for that. the routine of a run followed by a workout exercise and then repeat several more times is very similar to some of my varsity track workouts back in the 1980s

Hyrox as a sport won't live this down for a while, and I doubt she ever will. She'll be the lady that shat herself doing Hyrox for the rest of her life.
