The Fediverse. I can't be bothered explaining what the Fediverse is or how it works or how it differs from traditional social media. I can't be bothered recommending browser add-ons that correct issues that might not actually be 'issues' to the person in question. And even if I did all that, there's a 1/100 chance they'll actually care enough to try it, and an even smaller chance still that they'll stick with it. I don't even tell people that the memes I send them are from Lemmy, because I can't be bothered with the follow-up questions. My parents, for example, who use Facebook exclusively, could not be paid enough to even try the Fedi equivalent (Friendica). The average person doesn't care about their private data being sold or the behaviour of tech CEOs or the abuse of their psyches by algorithms, so there's no reason for them to go to the pain of learning an entirely new ecosystem that's less 'good' but requires more effort. The average person simply wants AI-generated images of lions with racist anti-immigrant slogans printed under them, and Facebook is unbeatable in that regard. I just can't be bothered. Plus, I like that it's comparatively less crowded here. Let Facebook keep their race rioters!

When I was younger, I was pretty into drugs. It would be hard to exaggerate how much fun I had. I don't regret much of it, me and the people I cared for never got hurt, sick, or in trouble. But we were definitely exposed to those dangers. And I don't think my lucky experience is a good example.

The worst part of drugs was that you ended up being "friends" with people you despise, mistrust, and are occasionally afraid of.

[–] determinist@kbin.earth 13 points 5 days ago

similar. I liked the taking of the drugs, but not really the getting of the drugs. Even the "okay" drug dealers were being graded on a curve - maybe compared to other drug dealers they were cool, but they weren't really cool, you know?

Playing magic the gathering.

To play at the level many people play at requires knowledge of hundreds or even thousands of cards and it's very difficult to play correctly because of the complexity of the game. Furthermore, the game pieces are at times ridiculously expensive and are often acquired by gambling, so it's very easy to waste way too much money if you aren't careful.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 38 points 5 days ago (13 children)

My buddy wanted me to get into magic so I bought a bunch of starter packs booster packs blah blah blah blah blah

I'm very thankful that he completely shredded me with a specialist deck that he had been slowly acquiring over the course of 5 years. I mean he beat me like a Persian rug on Nowruz

Made me realize that as much as there is a skill component, underlying it all... it is pay to win.

I'm really thankful he showed that to me, it made me realize I have zero interest.

Meal prepping the same lunch.

Been doing this for over a decade now. Minor variations in veggies, switched from chicken to beans and rice about a year ago. I love it. Very affordable and I never have to think about lunch.

I've had a co-worker call me a "bad man" when I told him I just eat the same thing everyday. I get it tho, people need to change things up. But for me as long as it has nutrients and doesn't taste bad I genuinely don't care that it's exactly the same.

[–] blackshirt@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

“bad man”

What was his fucking business? no one forced him to do the same, fuck that guy!

Group sex. I enjoy it very much, but it's only for the sort of people who already want to try it.

Self hosting. You have to be a bit nerdy to like doing sysadmin work.

drinking the oil or water out of a sardine can after taking the sardines out. It’s a favorite treat for me but everyone that has ever seen me drinking it has gagged so I don’t recommend it much🤷🏼‍♀️

King Oscar Tiny Tots are my favorites. Any olive oil is preferred over soybean oil.

Driving the Tanami Track.

It is one of the more remote roads in the world. Beautiful in its own way.

Can be 400-500km from emergency services. And 250km from shops. Hot and dusty.

--

Last year, driving north we saw a couple who had rolled their car, 100km from the nearest town. Very minor injuries, but one with an epilepsy diagnosis.

We were the first vehicle they had seen, in the 2 hours since the time of accident.

Transferred them and belongings to the nearest hospital 350km away.

I don't like to recommend things to other people. I have terrible taste in about everything.

Guns.

I like sport shooting at ranges and the historical context. For instance, I have a non-sporterised Lee-Enfield that was used to shoot Nazis.

However, firearms should only be owned by folks that have the training and level of responsibility to use them safely.

3d printing. It's essentially process engineering or manufacturing engineering but hobby level. It will go wrong and you will be frustrated and it will take experimentation and thought to figure it out. (it's better now than years ago, things have drastically improved.) if you don't like fiddling with things, don't do 3d printing. For me? I freaking love it. I love fixing printing mistakes or whatever. Solving problems is wonderful.

Horses. They're dangerous and expensive and will take all of your free time. Despite all of that, they're my passion.

Eating roasted peanuts shell and all. It's insanely salty and takes forever to chew, but no one told me you're not supposed to do that when I was a kid.

Daily driving beater cars. I have the tools, knowledge, shop space, and time to buy just about anything without getting scammed and get it back on the road. But if you don't have those things, buying a beater car can be a good way to create a lot of very expensive and difficult problems for yourself.

Daily driving Linux. I have the skills, knowledge, and time to deal with the little inconveniences that inevitably pop up from time to time. Many people do not.

Cooking from scratch every day. It requires a lot of knowledge, and time management to

  1. Make sure there's always something on hand to eat
  2. Make the most of what you've bought without wasting anything

My whole day-to-day schedule revolves around what I have, what I need to eat before it goes bad, and what I have time to cook. Many people aren't able to plan their whole lives around prep, cooking, and storage of food.

Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing. If you don't already know for sure you like these things, you're very likely to not enjoy them. In my experience, everyone who likes these things grew up liking them. I've never met anyone who grew up without them and decided later they did. I've met plenty of people who thought they'd enjoy these activities, only to find out half way through their first or second trip they actually hate everything about them and want to go home right NOW.

You take a big pull on your dab rig to fill the chamber and then put a balloon full of nitris over the inlet and whoop it all in at once and hold it as long as possible. Not for everyone.

Alternative Operating Systems other than Windows.

Yes most alternatives probably /could/ work but I don't want to become the tech support for it and I also don't want to give the trial by fire method. If someone was actually interested in it, chances are they would reach out themselves any time I mentioned about being on Debian, at which case I would help them get started and answer questions but, I'm not about to actively try to persuade people to change.

vigilantism.

it's one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself and your community but simultaneously the dumbest most dangerous thing you can do to yourself.

you will be hit, shot at, stabbed, maced, tazed, and chased. all in the name of personal justice that a government refuses to comply with.

your targets will be released. they will not serve time. they will commit crimes again, and I will be there.

don't do it.

Deadlock. I feel like you need experience in maybe 3 genres of games before you can understand the concept well, and then it's a sizable time commitment. I adore it, but that's a pretty steep entry fee.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I think that's the best part about the game. They didn't make a game for everyone. They made this ultra specific game that looks amazing, it is funny, it has hundreds of thousand voicelines. The movment is the best i have ever seen in a game. It's complicated as fuck, the later you start playing, the more characters you have to learn. But still, they cracked over 200k players last week after the update, and it is still invite only. I really enjoy my time right now, because i feel like we're in the good old times right now, before it goes public and the lootboxes roll out.

Sports cars.

You can get them at reasonable price. But damn, they're expensive to maintain, and you pay more taxes and insurance on them.

[–] rezifon@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

If you can fit in a Miata (and fit your ego into one), that's all anyone needs from a sports car really. They're fun on the road and the racetracks are lousy with them. Cheap to buy and maintain. Drive a Miata. Buy a homely one if you have to. Just drive it.
