what instance i use? currently just using the account i previously made.

You can't access piracy communities like !piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com from lemmy.world, so if you're interested in that, you need to switch

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

If you don't want it, I will take your username it's awesome.

[–] Outdated4134@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why didn't you stay two years ago?

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know about them, but it was pretty quiet even one year ago when I joined. Difficult to come from something as high traffic as Reddit.

[–] Outdated4134@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I came here in the rexodus a year and a half ago and I haven't been been to reddit since other than as the result of a search and, I do have to find the answer on reddit.

[–] Outdated4134@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago

Sure but I'll share

[–] oleorun@real.lemmy.fan 50 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Welcome back. You're on lemmy.world, a perfectly cromulent instance, so I'd just leave it as is.

[–] miss_demeanour@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Some folk may embiggen them to choose another instance to better federate the federation, federally-wise speaking.

[–] spacemanspiffy@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] ALiteralCabbage@feddit.uk 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I had a .world account but I can't type in my normal accent there so I moved to my current one.

I don't sound noble but I feel much happier.

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't see an accent in your username, though, so what are you referring to?

[–] ALiteralCabbage@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

Oh, I thought we could literally have nonstandard characters, haha. That would have been interesting.

[–] golli@lemm.ee 28 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yes, it does make a difference, but like with many other things you should not fall into the trap of decision making paralysis.

Your current instance lemmy.world is the largest and perfectly adequate for the majority. It also costs nothing to make accounts on other instances and is done in less time than it takes to decide between them.

That said some reasons to choose one instance over another:

Federation with other instances

Some instances choose not to federate with others. Common reasons being political ideology or NSFW/piracy/violent content. Others might be more liberal and leave it up to their users to block whatever within their own apps. As someone already mentioned world seems to have defederated dbzer0 the piracy focused instance. Some political instances that often also get defederated are the far left ones like hexbear and Lemmy grad (seems like those are defederated by lemmy.world as well).

Server location and performance

Especially country focused instances like lemmy.ca or feddit.uk will have their servers in their own countries. You can of course access them from anywhere, but a European user might have a better time choosing an instance with servers located in Europe, while someone in America might have lower latency with one located there.

Alternate frontends

If you are accessing Lemmy through a browser rather than an app, you might enjoy alternate frontends that change the design. Your current one lemmy.world for example offers 4 different designs that can also be found in the sidebar alexandrite, photon, voyager mobile and one looking like old.reddit.

General ideology of the instance

Your choice of instance might also tell others something about you. If you choose a country specific instance people seeing your profile name might assume you come from there, if you choose one with a particular political view people will probably assume you hold similar views. Same goes for other instances that are related to things like sexuality or hobbies.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Most (all?) alt frontends can be still be used with any instance, like Photon or Alexandrite

Edit: Voyager link

Not sure if there's a general link for "old" style known as mylym. The old url seems to have expired but you can always host it yourself for use with any instance.

[–] golli@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

TIL, thanks for letting me know!

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Where do you find these NSFW instances? I'm only asking so I don't accidentally view their content.

[–] golli@lemm.ee 11 points 2 days ago

Lemmynsfw.com is quite large and purely dedicated to NSFW content.

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It does matter.

For example, your instance, lemmy.world, blocks !piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

Welcome back,

You'll see the same communities/magazine no matter what's the instance you use. However, some delay due to federation is possible, it's espacially a problem with .world due to their relative weight.

The local feed means you'll see post from your instance, which may-be interesting as you'll see content you like if you choose a thematic instance, but it's not a blocking feature.

Then there is a bunch of weird instance, like grad where right-winger are role-playing being leftist by shit-posting on how much they love Kim il sun or Vladimir Putin. these are defederated by most big instances and you won't see their content (and believe me, you miss nothing)

[–] ech@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

You'll see the same communities/magazine no matter what's the instance you use.

Important caveat that, while all instances have equal access to all communities (barring defedaration), communities won't show up for instance users until at least one user has subscribed to it. Some instances use bots to automatically federate new communities, but it's not a guarantee. That said, World will likely have the most comprehensive access to other communities given the size of its active user base.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sort of: Each instance has its own rules, admin(s), and may or may not federate with certain other instances. Some may also be more stable or responsive than others depending on hosting.

My broad advice is to avoid hexbear, lemmygrad, and lemmy.ml because they are full of tankies/trolls, other than that: Find the instance you like best and feel free to use more than one!

I'm on Mbin these days, but when I was on Lemmy regularly, I liked to favor instances that got their power from renewables

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

hexbear didnt renew their domain 🤣

its now chapo.chat

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That redirects to hexbear.net

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Seems like they reclaimed it.

Last I heard, they failed the renewal and it was auctioning at $300 USD

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's really not clear that's what happened. A direct question and there's no real answer: https://hexbear.net/post/4470506

In the original thread about it there were people joking that the domain renewal didn't get paid after DOGE cut funding.

But it's just suspicious enough that if I were a user I'd not share any personal info and connect via a VPN...

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What happend was:

Someone posted about them going down.

I checked their domain, it was down.

Then someone said they moved to chapo.chat

I checked and, indeed, they are up and running on the new domain.

Then, today, I was informed that chapo.chat now redirects to hexbear.net, and hexbear.net is up again.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 2 days ago

Yes. But why? I wasn't able to find anything confirming the chain of events that led from an auction at over $2000 with the registration company refusing to cancel it, to Hexbear suddenly having their domain back and everything back to normal.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago
[–] mvirts@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

.world has memes and doom scrolling, what else could you want? 🥲

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Your instance isn't on the latest version of Lemmy but that won't matter too much.

Edit: also, welcome back. Hope you like what we've done with the place.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

the account you already have is goo(d)

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 3 points 3 days ago

No, it shouldn't matter.

lemmy.world is fine, its just sometimes a bit slow. Welcome back!

[–] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Nope! Only matters if your instance is defederated from ones you want. I like beehaw and I think they defederated from LW

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How do I know if mine is degenerated? I'm really new

[–] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 2 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

You can check on some site. Search lemmy federation check or something similar.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

No it doesn't matter that much. Unless you are seeing too many posts of stuff you don't like (e.g. US politics, tech news) and not enough of what you want to see (e.g. science, local content from a more regional instance, anarchist stuff, etc.), or you have a beef with how moderation is done on your local communities, then you should move to an instance more tailored to your needs.

[–] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

I mean it depends on the content you want to see. A lot of instances are defederated from others because of their highly opinionated users., or questionable content.

.world is a pretty general instance that appeals to most, so it's a good place to be.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

.world defeterated with a couple of other instances accusing them of being tankies. You might be missing some content. Also, there has been some recent drama about mods at .world. Stupid rulings. I don’t think .world is a great place to be. But that’s just me.

Sometimes I post links and avoid .world because I want to ensure that they get full reach because of the defed issue.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

.world defeterated with a couple of other instances accusing them of being tankies

Worth pointing out that those were very few who had little activity, and they're still federated with lemmy.ml despite a pretty big portion of users not wanting that.

To make it sound like .world is missing a large volume of posts is just disingenuous

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org -1 points 2 days ago

You might be missing some content.

To make it sound like .world is missing a large volume of posts is just disingenuous

Not what I said. I said "some."

[–] limer@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 3 days ago

I started in world, realized I was not a good fit, and transferred my first few months.

World is great for some. Many coming from Reddit will feel comfortable. Especially USA middle class liberals who do not vary their news and don’t think too hard about certain things
